Potential lifter issue

Purchased a 14 SGS back in APR and have just over 800 miles on it. Couple of weeks ago, motor developed an intermittent (e.g. would do it in the morning and lunch time, but not when coming home from work) ticking noise that sounded like it was coming from the front cylinder. Had it in last FRI for the ABS recall work and they couldn't duplicate.

Luckily, I couldn't pick it up until the next morning. No sooner than leaving the parking lot it started and I turned around for the techs to listen and they agreed it is probably a lifter issue. Haven't heard anything yet, but they were supposed to tear into it today. Will inform all once I get the findings.

I just dropped off my 14 SGS this morning for the same issue. Front cylinder sounds like a sewing machine. My first thought was lifter sticking. Waiting to hear what they say, and interested in what they say about yours too.

Finally got her back today after they replaced a lifter. I tried to get a better understanding of what happened (e.g. poor oil flow, lifter collapsed/sticking), but the tech that did it was not around. 1K service is coming soon, so will continue to monitor.

Glad you got yours back. Mine had only a half a qrt of oil in it. Only 700 miles since my 1k service. Rear cylinder using oil and full of sludge. They are replacing the motor, but Im not real happy that it needs this kind of repair with only 1750 miles on it.

It's called warranty. Name a vehicle manufacturer that doesn't have any issues. Good luck. I'd just be glad their taking care of it instead of blowing it off.

Don't get me wrong buckshot I am very glad that they are taking very good care of me. The guys at the dealer have been super, got me in right away, they insisted on a new motor and not a repair, they gave me a real nice 12 ultra limited for a loaner and with a 2-3 week back up they said I'm only going to be a week to 10 days to get it back. I own an auto repair shop so I know all about the value of a good warranty and the issues with manufacturer defects. Still bums me out that I waited 20 years to finally get my Harley and this happens 3 months in. Cant wait to get her back

thexmann - Thx for the update. You are the fourth I've heard of with lifter issues this year. Must be something going on huh?

Well still haven't got my ride back :( they are on the third motor. HD rep coming out to see if they are gonna give me a new bike. At this point might as well wait a couple of weeks for the 2015 to come out.

Holy crap!!! I would be jumping up and down on somebody's chest!!! Sorry for your troubles... I wouldn't be calm at all

Wow. I would hope that they would kick it in the ass to get some type of resolution for the customer. Hang in there Bud. I feel for ya.

So HD rep came in yesterday after an all day debate with the general manager, who was pushing to get me another bike, they could not find another 2014 SGS peace officers edition and the rep would not go for a 2015. He agreed to just an SGS, which I did not want. So I came up with a compromise, I agreed to take my bike back with the third motor in it and they agreed to pay for a stage 2 upgrade over the winter when service slows down. That's 2500 I planned on spending on it this winter anyhow. So I may pay the difference and go stage 4.

Wolverine Harley has been great to me. From the service writer to the service manager and the general manager they were willing to go to bat for me on anything I wanted. They gave me my choice of any used bike they had, I went back every week for three weeks and grabbed another loaner. Starting with an Ultra limited then a built up electric classic that was fast as hell to the CVO screaming eagle limited that had all the bells and whistles. They took great care and were very compassionate to this situation. **** happens and I understand glad I extended the warranty 5 years. And happy to have baby back.

As long as you are happy... thats what counts... glad the dealer went to bat for you... it means a lot to the customer..

thexmann I was happy to hear another good story about dealers. Many times they get a good bashing from forum-folk but there are good ones . . . no, great ones out there. Spazz has one and so do I ! ;)

Kudos to Wolverine HD, Chesters HD and Bumpus HD (and many more!)

I am always willing to give a shout out for my dealer also. Open Road Harley in Fond Du Lac, Wi. Only dealer in Wisconsin to win the Gold Award for Excellence. I believe 1 of 24 in the nation. Great sales, service and parts. If ya get in the area stop in and talk to Pete the owner or Mike in sales. You will be taken care of.
