Pulling cat from stock header pipe

Has anyone taken the cat out of their stock header pipe? If so, does it improve performance? Run cooler? Sound louder? Thinking bout cutting in apart and having one of my fabricators at work reweld it. Any thoughts?

While I have never personally done it we have had a couple of customers who have done it to their bikes and that are happy with it. They've claimed that it does make the bike sound louder but I'm not sure how the performance is. One thing that would concern me is whether or not pulling the cat out will alter the air:fuel ratio. If it does, which I would think it would, then you'd want to make sure you have the bike re-tuned otherwise you could run the risk of the mufflers discoloring.

Anyway, those are my thoughts / concerns. I'm interested in hearing what others might have to say.
 
Thanks for the feedback. I already have a tuner on the bike when I changed the slip-ons and air cleaner, so I can modify the fuel/air mixture for the less resistance. Just what to know if I would achieve better performance with exhaust scavenging of the 2into1into2 verses true duals. Want to keep the dual exhaust and get best performance.

I have done it. Personal thoughts are:

Does it improve performance? - didn't really notice any difference. That said I have a stage 4 engine so it is a bit hard to tell.
Run cooler? - yes to this one. Also the heat off the pipe is reduced
Sound louder? - again didn't really notice any difference.

As for the tune I did the mod just before a tune and the guys told me that they did not need to make any changes to the air / fuel ratio but again that could also be due to the fact that it is a stage 4 engine.

I just bought a no-cat pipe off eBay. 10 HP is a pretty good increase and I figure I will remove the cat from mine a and sell it on eBay after I put the new one on. Thanks for all of the feedback, it just validated my thoughts on this.

Update, installed the header pipe with no cat and remapped my tuner. I took it out tonight and all I can say is WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I would highly recommend to anyone that doesn't want to spend big $$$ on a whole new system.

I gutted my cat. No O2 cross talk. Sounds much better and seems to have more power.

Hello everyone, Im a newbie and want a better sounding and performing bike (2012 SG). I eventually plan on pushrods, cam and tuner. With that being said, exhaust needs to be done. Besides taking the header off and cutting the section out behind the collector, What else needs to be done?

You might want to just try putting on a new muffler . Reinharts or Vance & Hines. Removing the cat can be complicated unless you've done it before or have someone that can do it for you .

I have the v&h monster round slip-ons. I bought the bike like that so I'm not sure if they have cats or not. Probably not I'm guessing with the stock head pipes.

yes- your stock head pipes have the cats in them. If you are running the monster slip ons with the stock head pipe, it should sound pretty good. You can leave it that way until you decide to get a
full new exhaust or you can remove the cat in your current one--up to you. Maybe some one else can tell you how to do it. I haven't done it--so I don't know.
 
A set of V&H 2/1 stainless hi-output Pro pipes would look baddass on that bike! Wouldn't ya Know I just happened to have a set all boxed up and under foot! :cool:

I cut the headpipe on my 13 SG and removed the cat. performance increase? maybe a slight one, as for cooler? Hell Yes!! and yes its louder too. The cat muffles noise very well. Make sure when you cut the pipe to keep it in one piece, IE just cut a window in it. Makes line-up issues a thing of the past.
 
I cut the collector behind the O2 sensors underneath the heat shield clamp. Then I drilled, chiseled, dug out the honeycombed mess for about half an hour. Afterwards I had the pipe rewelded at a local shop and the ceramic coated silver. The clamp covers the weld. The bike runs perfectly. I know some very knowledgeable tuners have spoken about cross talk between the O2 sensors causing a problem tuning. The tech at my HD shop had no trouble with the tune. The bike runs great and good mileage if I stay off the throttle. FWIW the rear O2 sensor(I think) is in its own header tube which runs about 6" past the sensor before it opens into the collector.
