10K service, on the way home, Derby cover disappears...

Hey Folks,

Like I said, I brought in my Street Glide for the 10K service. Everything seemed to check out just fine, may need tires come the next service. Get a bill for $0, and gladly head on my way. I have pre-paid maintenance for my bike, hence the free service. Best $700 I've spent, by the way.

Anyway, at some point on my trip back home, a distance of about 15-17 miles I estimate, my Derby Cover apparently came off. I didn't notice it falling off either, which kind of disturbs me. You would think I'd hear the clang of about 5lbs of metal falling off the bike, but I did not. I did notice that my clutch sounded a bit louder the closer I got to home, but not enough to cause immediate worry.

So, I get back to my garage, hop off the bike and realize the cover is missing and everything behind it was covered in oil. Fresh oil, thankfully. I called the dealer and a couple hours later they had a truck pick myself and the bike back and head to the dealer. Everyone was quite apologetic understandably.

The service guy asked if I wanted to upgrade the cover, which I declined. I like the smooth simplicity of the stock one. After they replaced the cover and hopefully topped off the fluids, they did kind of a crappy job wiping down the oil on the bike and handed me a $50 gift certificate for the inconvenience.

This is where I start to question whether or not they could have done more. I feel like a $50 gift certificate was about the bare minimum they could have offered. I'm not sure I was put in harms way, but getting oil all over the tail end sucked and was a real pain in the bottom to clean off.

Basically, I just wanted to see what others thought about the situation.

Oddly, every time I've had the bike serviced by them, I've had email surveys sent by the next day, which I generally have returned with positive reviews. No survey this time, hmmm.

The name of the dealer will remain anonymous as I'm not trying to deter anyone from going there. I think up until this point they have always done the right thing by me, just wondering if they could have done better this time and if I should have expected more.

Sorry for the rambling....

id at least go back and have them clean it better if they did a crappy job. the gift certificate is a nice gesture, but Id still be unhappy the bike is oily

Yea, whenever I take mine in for service, they ALWAYS wash it afterwards. That is the least they could have done as far as cleaning up the mess the caused.

I would tke it back and have them wash and detail it the right way. But it sounds like you have already done their work for them cleaning it.

If they forgot to screw on the derby cover, makes me wonder what else they forgot to do. That's a pretty obvious mistake if you ask me. I can't believe they didn't wash it either..
You can get the PDF manual here, if you don't have one. May be worth going over what they were suppose to do.

I would definitely say you were placed in some level of danger, slinging oil on the frame and tire aint good. I would think that one of the fundamentals any maintenance shop has, is the ability to do routine things routinely and quality control is a must. Somebody in that shop doesn't have their head in the game and Im glad to hear the only thing hurt are some feelings.

My $0.02 is regardless of which stealership unless you know the owner or your relative works there they see you as a $$$$$ and that's it. Keep in mind ALL retailers are out there to make money and they don't give a rat's tail about you. They are so freaking sweet to you when you are willing to spend money, that's about it. This is not just for Harley, this goes for everything else. That's the reason I try to get the best deal and trust me if they don't make money they will not be in business. So I don't feel bad at all when I approached them after doing my homework on how much the product is worth and how much the markup is.

Oh yea, they should have offer you 50% off on any product or any upgrade and polish your bike....at least they can do.

I would be concerned as well.. I would be concerned about how much oil did I lose and how much future damage will occur as a result..
I would not be happy at all

Given the short distance you drove home and considering the primary fluid oils the chain and clutch I would think there is no damage incurred but I would give them a call and explain that you realise mistakes can be made and thank them for the gift certificate but explain the tedious time you had cleaning oil from the bike. TELL THEM, that you appreciate their sentiment but to make it totally right they should offset your aggravation by throwing in a free detail job at your next service. My local dealer would not flinch at this suggestion because they like happy customers with happy mouths!
