120R Failed Lifter

I received an email from a buddy in Texas. It seems one of his friends had his 120R go bad. Here is a copy of his message:

About 3-4 weeks ago when Sam was riding his Road Glide in the country by himself, he heard a strange noise from the motor. It began to lurch somewhat and instead of stopping he continued another 5 miles or so until the noise got worse and the bike started to act stupid. He called his wife and she came with a trailer to pick up the bike.

A day or so later, he trailered his bike to the dealer for analysis/diagnosis. A few days later, the Service Mgr. called him and asked him to come in for a consultation. Seems a lifter failed and, after riding it for several miles, did substantial damage to the motor. They said it could be repaired, but required many parts, labor, etc. Or, he could purchase a new 120R for around $1,000 more than a repair job.

So, Sam ordered a new motor costing $5,600, excluding labor, A failed lifter is somewhat rare, according to H-D, but those things happen.
Unfortunately, there was no warranty on the motor.

I know of a few ppl that have had failed lifters in 96 and 103 bikes. If I was him, once that new 120 comes in, I would put in a set of lifters from a reputable engine company like Woods or Fueling. I get lifter slap at least once a week or so with my 103 with original lifters. I have 22.5K miles on it.

Hate if for your friend tho. Sure thats an expense he wasn't wanting to have right now.

I put a 120R in my bike a couple years ago. Prior to install we tore it down and welded crank and also put in S&S premium lifters along with some other changes. I have already replaced lifters again. As soon as they start sounding funny, they're gone and new ones installed. A lot cheaper than the alternative.
