I was going to do a flush of my brake system and while looking at the two caps on the front and back masters the front says "use only DOT4" and the back says" use only DOT5. Is it possible that HD built these bikes with two different brake fluids? I just bought this bike a month ago and I can't tell the difference between the two fluids..both are dark and in need of a change. The rear doesn't have any kinda purple color at all. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and flush out the back real good with DOT5 and leave it that way.

Thanks, Tom

Also Dot 5 is silicone based, and is hydrophobic (will not absorb water) unlike dot 4 (and other glycol based fluids 3 and 5.1) is, but dot 5 is NOT compatible with anti-lock braking systems

I would take a small sample of the fluid in the rear master and try mixing it with some new DOT 4 you are going to use for your front brakes.

I would then try to get a bit of DOT 5 and perform the same test.

if you are mixing two different brake fluids, it will be very obvious.

dot 5 is purple as you mentioned.

OK that's a good idea because I have no idea what is in there. They both seem to be the same. I'll try what you said.
Thanks
