CousinKap I'm sure your enjoying them CFR's!
Let me throw this at IronAcers - current setup Rhinehart 4" full exhaust on my 12 flhx -SE air cleaner with SE tuner. Have a set of CFR's ready to go & understand I need a new header setup. Would I need the PC V for the best tune or can I use my current hardware? Any info would be great or if anyone wants to chime in!
Hi Major91 and thanks for the shout out...I'm more than happy to throw in my 2 cents on this topic.
You are indeed correct that you would not be able to install the CFRs on the headers from your Rinehart 4" full system simply because the header diameter on the Rinehart full system is larger than the 1-3/4" headers that the CFRs are designed to work with. We have a lot of folks who pair their CFRs with
Vance & Hines Dresser Duals and I have yet to hear one negative comment regarding this set-up.
As for tuners, from conversations I have had with Cary Faas (owner of CFR) he does not particularly care for the Screamin' Eagle tuner but I'm not completely sure as to the specifics as to why he does not recommend this system with his slip-ons. With that, my assumption would be that regardless of the tuner used, the most important thing is that the air:fuel ratio is adjusted properly so that the bike will not run too lean (aka: hot) because if the bike runs too lean you run a very high risk of the chrome discoloring over time simply because it is getting to hot. Unfortunately, since this discoloration is specifically caused by a tuning issue and not a chrome defect, it would not be something a warranty would cover. In addition, having this air:fuel ratio accurately adjusted, this will certainly aid in performance simply because the motor is performing as it was designed to do.
We've had the good fortune of getting a lot of folks set-up with CFR slip-ons throughout the years....while some of these folks have decided to take a chance and not have the bike re-tuned, some go with the Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner and are happy with it but I would say the majority of the folks we have with have chosen to go with either the
Dynojet Power Commander V or
Dynojet Power Vision. In addition, a good number of folks choose to invest in the
ThunderMax Autotune System which in my opinion is the best system on the market but it is a little 'salty' in terms of cost but given what it does, it is more than worth the investment.
Again, regardless of what tuner you ultimately choose to go with, the most important thing is to make sure that the 'tune' loaded onto the module properly sets the air:fuel ratio to 1) provide the best performance possible and 2) does not cause the bike to run too lean (aka: hot). I think everyone who owns a Harley can agree that these are expensive, sophisticated machines and for the investments we put into them, the accessories we put on them should only enhance their performance and value, not hinder it.
Hopefully this helps answer your question but certainly feel free to let me know if others come up.
