Exhaust, tuner and air cleaner options

So I decided I want the V&H header pipes and Monster Ovals. Monster Ovals are expensive, but I like the looks. I'm open on air cleaner. I like the looks of the V&H, but dealer says go with something like the Screamin' Eagle Heavy Breather Elite, which if course is stupid money. As far as tuner, the HD dealer says don't buy their FP3, buy the Harley tuner and let our guy do a custom tune. They also steered me away from the V&H header pipes because they have a guy that modifies the originals and cuts out the cat. Cost to do that is half the cost of V&H headers.

So the modified stock headers, V&H Monster Ovals, Harley tuner and Heavy breather came to $2300. That includes labor, which I can do myself. About the only thing I can't do is modify my header pipes, but I can buy them and install myself for the same...or less. Seems like I should be able to shop around, even if it means doing another brand of pipe, and find a good deal on the parts. Most, if not all of the tuners, have predefined profiles for different pipe/air cleaner setups. Is a custom tune really necessary. I just want it to run good and sound good. We're not going racing.

What do y'all think? Feel free to comment on what you did and if your are happy with the results.

Thanks

I'm not surprised the dealer wants you to use the H-D tuner. It's more parts and labor money in their pocket. For a simple tune that you can do with your smartphone, the FP3 is the way to go. If you want lots of engine customization and fine tuning then there are other options. I have the Dresser Duals, Twin Slash Ovals and FP3 on my 2015 FLHXS and am more than satisfied. I didn't have to spend any money, now or in the future on dyno tuning. V&H has some great maps, especially if your using their products. Lots of people here have great things to say about the FP3 but ultimately it depends how much refinement you want to do and what engine work you may do in the future. There are various opinions on changing out the AC on the 103 High Output models. I looked at the H-D Heavy Breather and K&N Cone setup but I just couldn't find any solid evidence to prove they were worth all that money. IMHO the Stage 1 AC from H-D is your best bet for the money. Many others here will chime in with their opinions I'm sure. Good Luck!

Good to know. The dealer did suggest that. I like to looks of the Heavy Breather, but at $400, the stock breather cover is starting to look better. My thought on sticking with V&H was exactly as you said. Using their setup with their tuner, they should have accurate maps for the tuner. I doubt I'll ever go inside the engine like a cam swap. Pipes and breather is about as far as I want to go.

But of course the HD dealer wants you to buy Screamin' Eagle, Harley tuner etc. I put the V&H twin slash ovals on my SG and am very pleased with their looks & deep rumble. To complete the Stage 1 I opted for V&H's VO2 naked intake because I wanted to put my original air cover back on. Lastly, take a serious look at the FuelMoto tuners...fabulous product, terrific lifetime support, very competively priced, & one of "our" forum sponsors.

Ok..... I've been keeping up on all the talk on the V&H FP3... What i want to know is this..... I have a PCv tuner with V&H Dresser Duals and Twin Slash Rounds... Had a "Dyno" from the dealer...Still doesn't seem to run right.
If i bought the FP3 with a canned map to my setup can i just unplug the power commander & replace it with the FP3 and be just fine??? I have a 2012.... Help me please cause i don't want to give dealer any more money than i need to.... Thanks, Scott

If you have a Dyno Jet power commander you should be able to go on Dyno Jets web site and plug in the info on your bike and pick from tune's in there data base and download a new tune into your tuner with the software that came with your tuner

It looks like you have a lot to chose from

Sorry Streetglide12 the FP3 isn't compatible with pre 2014 models. They have other models but I don't know much about them.

In my case I found the V&H Power Duals at $440 and the FP3 for $300 and the SE Stage 1 AC for ~$100 (No tax + free Shipping) and used the Street Cannons that were already on the bike so without the slip-ons I am in this for well under $1000 and the labor time was a little over 2.5 hours total time (me) for the install never having done this before.

You just don't need to do as much to the new 103 to get reasonable performance vs. the older technology motors and even though our 2012 is not FP3 capable (non CANBUS) the engine is stout and a good stage one will make a world of difference in your riding pleasure IMO.

Good luck!

FuelMoto has a pretty good price on the FP3. Revzilla looks OK on the rest of it. Still searching though. I think I'm sold on the FP3. I like the smart phone interface.

If you're looking for better prices on Screaming Eagle parts check out http://www.manchesterharley-superstore.com in the shopping section. I just bought Harley's super tuner from them, and the heavy breather elite. The breather was $80 cheaper, tuner was about $100 cheaper at the time. Shipping was FAST too!
