The way I did my warranty...
Bought a 2001 CVO Wide Glide II (my FIRST H-D) as a retirement present to myself in Nov. 2000, using "half" of my "lump sum" vacation leave acct. payout (Never took leave in 28 years)... My wife got the other half of my "leave payout". Had $8500 left from "my half" after buying the CVO for $25,000, so put it in a separate I. R. A. (Incident Repair Account) instead of buying the then $2400 ext warranty (actually a REAL Harley-Davidson** extended warranty... not aftermarket). NEVER had to use a penny of it. After 15 yrs, I sold the IMMACULATE HOT ROD '01 CVO with a 95" motor at auction to get cash for my SGS (The CVO buyer, a collector, was waiting in the showroom w/ his truck/trailer in the lot) MY IRA made $2600 interest in 15 years. I now had $11,134.50 in my separate "just in case" IRA. I knew I was going to do my best to "void" ANY factory warranty from the MoCo within 2 years by adding stuff to my SGS that they simply don't like.
I'M COVERED & still making a measly 2% on my little Harley I.R.A. in spite of the FED ...& I can do anything I want to my bike. The MoCo can't stop me.
I use an indy shop that has two former H-D Master techs for anything I do on my bike.
My dealer's service team is great, but I choose to go to my indy shop should I have an incident. TRUST is soooo very important & my techs can take my SG apart & put it back together in their sleep at $65 an hour.
They get a big-time break on parts direct from H-D, & offer me a 15 to 20% discount on factory parts. The MoCo has threatened to remove their parts discount a few times, but then The MoCo realizes that Ted & Ronnie spend between $80K & $100K on parts on a consistent basis yearly.
