This happened while out riding today. Not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. Any ideas?

Tighten the pinch bolt. There is a pinch screw on that lever arm to secure it to the shaft.

There's no bolt back there. Does this piece I am pointing to go inside the cylinder and the shift lever should be flush against the cylinder, which would give me enough on the end to put a bolt on?

There is a small pinch bolt at the bottom front of your front shifter arm. Look behind the forward shifter arm. Its very small (3/16" allen head at the bottom, facing front). While your at it, check tightness of your toe & heel shifter assembly.(1/4" allen).

I saw that back there and put an allen wrench in it. It was tight enough to where I could not turn it.

When you move your Heel/Toe shifter, is the Shaft moving with it? Are your shifter lever pinch bolts aligned in their rounded groove? Are your shift levers loose on the shaft, or tight?

I would suggest taking both of the shift levers (Heel & Toe) off. You have to completely remove the 1/4" allen head bolts, not just loosen them. Then, check the movement of the grooved shaft, by moving the forward shift lever (next to the front cylinder). Try to remember, or "MARK" the levers position on the grooved shaft, for correct re-assembly.

When I rock the shifter and put my finger on the back side of the front shifter arm hole where the shaft comes in, I can feel it spinning in the hole. I tried again to tighten or loosen the 3/16 allen and it's so tight I cannot move it either way. After looking at this for so long, it seems like the teeth inside the front shifter arm are gone.

I had the same problem last year. First time it happened I got it back on and tightened and thought the problem was fixed, then a couple weeks later it happened again and there no was way to get it tight enough to work...I wound up using baling wire to get it secure enough to make it home. Since it was still under warranty I just had the dealer take care of it, the shaft was totally stripped. The dealer simply dressed the splines and it's been working fine since even though I was doubtful at first that his fix would be adequate.

Usually gives you a little warning. It has happened to me as well, but I caught it after noticing sloppy shifts. Easy to fix. I'm sure you have it figured out. spray some penetrating catalyst (PB Blaster or similar) down behind the little pinch bolt, and let it sit for awhile.

Great! I can manually get it to 2nd gear. I'll have to limp to a dealer tomorrow and have it repaired.

Happened to me. I had to tighten the allen bolt on the engine side of the inner primary where the shift arm connects to the rod which is attached to the transmission. I believe it is notched. Once I matched the bolt to the flat spot, I was good to go. Hope this helps

Check the teeth on the heal/toe arms as well. More than likely the shaft is gone tho. This happened to me on my bike about 8 months ago. Was stuck in 2nd gear. Unless you have a no deductible extended warranty you would be about $30 or so in parts if you did this yourself.

I never had this problem with my 06 but have had to have 2 of those shafts replaced on my 13. HD must have changed suppliers of that part or changed specs on it or something. Seen alot of bikes have this issue, even tho minor still a PITA!

Happened to me too...no warning....was at a stop light, go to shift in 1st and nothing...had to push it out of traffic to a parking lot for further examination.

Your shifter rod lever ( #11) is worn and needs to be replaced. Its common for this to happen and the weak link in the shifter linkage. The location of the pinch bolt (#8) is not at the 6:00 position and doesn't exert the same pressure on both sides of the shifter shaft causing one side of the shifter rod lever to wear faster than the other, coupled with a softer metal than the shifter shaft. Mine was covered by warranty, both times. Some even carry a spare...just in case. Others have had it completely come off while rolling down the road.

Good luck....

I use to carry a set of vise grips with a flange welded to it for this exact reason. Guess its time to make another pair

Another WEAK POINT in the linkage assembly is the OEM shift rod. Those end joints with the "wobble bolt" are just junk. Replace that with a quality shift rod that has "aircraft quality" heim joint ends for a more POSITVE (& stable) connection to both the tranny shifter arm and the forward shifter arm. The H-D "premium" shifter arms are much more than just "bling". IMO

Can't thank you guys enough..It sucked limping home in 2nd gear yesterday. I am calling the dealer today and see if they have these parts in stock. If not, I will order online and do myself..
