Hi,
I just wanted to give a very quick review of my new Harley Hammock seat. My main goal was to get something that would be comfortable over a long day of riding and would allow me to enjoy the ride, rather than waiting for the next stop so I could get off and relax my butt. I also wanted something that would allow my lady to ride, without me worrying about her falling off the back due to the bad slant on the rear of the stock seat. I have a friend who rides a lot of longer trips (6-10 hours a day) who has a Hammock seat and he loves it. I did look at Mustang and Corbin seats but couldn't consistently find happy reviews on them. I also didn't want to have to send my seat away to get it modified by someone and not be able to ride for who knows how long. I realize however that what works for one person may not be comfortable for another. My lady hasn't taken a ride on the Hammock yet but based on it being flat, rather than sloping backwards I think she will like it in addition to the extra padding it provides. Here's what I found:
Pros:
- Much more comfortable than the stock seat and I can ride all day without discomfort. The stops I take to get gas are all I need. Harley has designed a "fabric hammock" into the seat which cushions you from direct contact with the seat pan when going over bumps and rough roads.
- Provides an extra 2" of foam over the stock seat to provide more comfort.
- I lost about 35 pounds and my once padded butt is more bony now so the extra padding is appreciated riding over train tracks, bumps and rough roads.
Cons:
- The extra 2" of padding increases the profile of the seat a lot so you lose that sleek, trim look of the stock seat. I've traded looks for functionality. It make make the seat too high up for some riders with legs not as long as mine. I'm 6'3".
- The Hammock feels a little wider between my legs but it's by no means uncomfortable. It's just taken a little getting used to. It doesn't rub or cause discomfort.
- The short detachable sissy bar/backrest isn't compatible with it if that is a concern for you. My lady is only 5'1" but with the standard height sissy bar it fits her just fine. But it may be something to consider as everyone fits things differently.
Some have said they found that after putting some miles on the seat it would fit you better after it "learned your shape" but I haven't noticed a difference yet. All in all I'm very happy with it. It wasn't the cheapest seat ($550USD or $669CDN), but I figured I wouldn't have the wait time to have it delivered from the USA and hadn't read too many bad reviews on it. Most of the ones I did were from people with pre-2014 versions.
