I bought a used 2012 Street Glide w/10k miles on it. The rear wheel is cupping badly. Tread depth is ok. I'll probably need a new tire this summer. (I did a search and nothing came up.) I just checked all the obvious, axle bolt, swing arm movement and air pressure. All seamed fine. Of course I have no idea what the previous owner did to the bike. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Peter

At 10k just change it. Your chasing a ghost at this point. Put a new tire on and go from there.

Previous owner did probably not check air pressure on a regular basis.

Hello and welcome.
Not to worry about the cupping or scalping.
Cupping, or scalloping, is a natural wear pattern on motorcycle tires that follows the tread pattern. It is not a sign that you have bad suspension parts but shows that your tire is gripping the road when you make turns. Extreme forces that come in to play when the bike is leaned in a turn produce the effect. The leading edge of the tread grips the road and the rubber is scuffed off the tire in that area causing a depression. As the tire rotates, the pressure moves to the trailing edge of the tread pattern and the tire flexes there which causes less scuffing so less material is ground off the tire. The more complex the tread pattern, the more complex the scalloping pattern will be. Softer tire compounds are more prone to cupping. Improper balance has nothing to do with "cupping" on a motorcycle tire. Improper balance will merely cause your bike to vibrate at speed. Low tire pressure will exacerbate this wear pattern.

Welcome from Nashville T2C-154. Low air pressure was most likely the culprit from previous owner. Even though the tread depth you say is OK, If it were mine, I would bite the bullet and go ahead and replace that tire now. As a reminder, you should check your tires often-I check mine every 2 weeks and run 40 front, 42 rear.

Welcome to the fun keep an eye on the air pressure 38 to 40 psi and when you do change it have them check the wheel bearings really good.

Excellent point TomA- I believe I have a front bearing starting to go on mine now with only 12K
