How hard are HD camshafts?

Can it be drilled and tapped without carbide? Have a silly home project I'm working on.

It probably has a HRC close to 60, I would start with carbide.

Thanks Guys. I am wanting to tap the ends of the cams. I have a set of used take outs on there way to me and will measure the existing hole in the ends and possibly open it up some and then tap.
 
I think tapping is going to be the hard part. The lobes are hardened more than the whole shaft itself but it's still hardened none the less. I would use a carbide bit.
 
You can have the threads EDM burned in. Will work just fine. Send them to me if you cannot find a company to do it. Look for a local tool and die maker or moldmaker.
