I spent hours researching all the possible cheap and expensive solutions on this last year and ultimately what I went with was a Riders Claw - http://www.ridersclaw.com/. By far the best solution in my opinion and it is made in the US (near Chicago if I recall).
They offer black or chrome and it is a nice clean solution that doesn't get in the way and doesn't look bulky, if you know what I mean. The cable that comes with the mount is fine, but I chose a "Apple Dock Connector to USB and 3.5mm Audio Cable". This allows charging and it doesn't use the ipod/iphone as a amp/volume source.
We are approximately a month out from launching a new Street Glide iPhone / GPS Mount for batwing fairing bikes that is somewhat similar to our Road Glide Mount (link below). Like the Road Glide Mount, the Street Glide Mount will keep the device positioned in the riders line of site.
