Long ride necessities

Hey guys,

So I've made a few long rides of about 1000 miles before. Next week I'm taking off to Texas for another 1000 mile ride. I haven't specialized much in long riding and in wondering what bike additions you use for long rides. I have a tank bag which I've previously used for snacks and drinks, and sissy bar mounted bags for plentiful storage. What I'm wondering is what are those little things you won't tour without?

Back rest? Water bottle holder? Other things that make life better? What won't you ride for a long distance without? Currently I'm thinking of getting some saddlebag liners. I usually use a duffel bag but it is a little large so it actually robs me of some space in the saddlebag. One of my bags is pretty full of riding gear (gloves, tool pouch, sun screen and a towel) so I usually only use the other bag for gear plus my sissy bar bag.

I did my first long trip in June 2017, I used a cheap duffel from Walmart on one side, the other side was packed loose . Soft cooler on the backrest rack for my drinks, with the high temps of my trip, I had to restock the cooler at least once in my 12-14hr hauls. T-bag Baja strapped down for my back rest. I used a tank bag for easy snack access and electronics but it’s hard to eat and drink while riding wearing my full face helmet.

Best investment I've made for long rides has been the adjustable rider backrest. I was able to do 891 miles in one day and felt good when I got off the bike.

You may consider a Camelback rather than water bottles. In the summer, I freeze a half filled bladder and then top it off before I leave. I always wear compression pants and shirt under my riding gear, It seems to stave off fatigue and muscle aches.

I use the liners for the saddle bags cause it makes it easy to unload. they take up a little room but its worth it. another trick I learned was to pack old underwear, socks and t shirts and toss them out each night so that way you get more room as you go or as my wife puts it you get to bring back souvenirs. I also use a camepak that holds enough water that I don't have to refill it all day. also I pack a tire repair kit with co2 inflaters. enjoy your long ride.

I use a food saver vacuum sealer. you would be surprised how thin a few t shirts will shrink down to. Sounds crazy but if your hurting for room it works great.

works if you don't have a inner tube. also just to get me to somewhere I can have a tire installed. luckily haven't had to use it yet.

When I purchased my 16' they did some raffle spin thing and I won $200 so i purchased the Harley liners for the bags, people are correct its so convenient, especially if its raining.
I bring some sort of knife, and a small survival kit. (I switch between camping and hotels)
Im sure there is other must haves but thats the off the top of my head must haves.
