New helmet - bluetooth options?

Hi all.

I recently switched helmets from a brain bucket to a DOT 3/4. It is not going to be an easy switch for me but my wife will feel that much safer about me. Has anyone else had a hard time going from a "minimal" helmet to a large, massive feeling helmet?

Anyway, I am wondering if anyone uses a bluetooth in a 3/4 helmet and if so, which one is recommended? Is it comfortable or did it take some getting used to? If anyone can help I would appreciate their feedback.

Thanks.

I have a full face with Sean SMH10. My bro-in-law has a 1/2, riding on a heritage soft tail. Other than the wind noise over his mic, he doesn't have any issues with hearing me...

  • Up to three headsets can be paired together for crystal clear intercom communications at distances of up to 500 meters. (An Unlimited number of bike-to-bike intercom connections are available, at distances of up to 1.5 miles, when headsets are linked to Bluetooth enabled FRS portable radios).
  • Built-in 3.5mm stereo output jack designed for using in-ear speakers or ear-buds.
  • Control head is powered by a rechargeable Lithium Ion/Polymer power cell providing 9-13 hours of use from a full charge.

I wear a Harley Davidson 3/4 helmet with a Scala 9 communication headset attached. The speakers are underneath the liner on the left and right side and the boom mic in front of my mouth. I use it for intercom when the wife is along side on her bike or bluetooth it to my iphone for music when riding alone. For me, the system works great and is easy to hear. I just wish it would fully integrate (bluetooth) with the 6.5 infotainment system on my bike but the idiots at HD have decided that it will not happen. :(

Thanks GAFLHXS for the reply. Even with the current infotainment updates from HD your system does not integrate? I think that the idiots at HD are hit or miss. One day you'll get one story, the next day something else.

No, none of my headsets will pair and work with the HD infotainment system. If anyone is aware of an aftermarket non-HD headset that will pair I would appreciate the info.

Sadly NO headset BT pairing for the Boom Box and doesn't look to be coming in this hardware generation either. Are you listening Harley? make a liar out of me (please!).

OK I am slightly confused now and I know it was neither of your intentions.

I can pair my samsung cell phone to my bike and make calls, but the person on the other end cannot hear me speak because I am not connected to a bluetooth device. My assumption was that if I were to pair a bluetooth to my phone, wouldn't this allow me to use the functionality of the Infotainment system to make the call while riding and send and receive through the connected (to my phone not the bike) bluetooth?

I even get confused when trying to explain what I am doing or would like to do when it comes to electronics!

FLHX14, here is how I understand the system. The functionality of BT on the Boom is a signal receiver only, it does not transmit a BT signal. There is no microphone system built into the Boom infotainment system. So yes, you will need to pair a microphone device to your phone ( a device that sends and receives BT signal) . also, I added some helpful notes when plugging up the device from the manual below. Since I have purchased my SGS, there seems to be no Boom tech experts at my servicing HD dealer, I mean, someone who really understand the the applications and knows who to use the system and deep dive the layers of pages and function, so I understand the confusion and fustration.

Many USB and Bluetooth compatible devices allow playback
through the audio system speakers or headsets. Refer to
Table 24 (USB device) and Table 25 (Bluetooth device) for a
list of selections to operate these devices.
Control of the media device is through the handlebar controls,
touch screen (6.5 models only), soft keys (4.3 models only)
and passenger controls (if equipped).
NOTE
• Media playback over USB takes precedence over
Bluetooth. On some devices, Bluetooth audio streaming
is not accessible while the device is connected and playing
through the USB port.
• Some of the functions described are not available for
Bluetooth connected devices.

Bluetooth is real finicky like that. The fact that the boom box even registers as a hands free calling device drives me up the wall. Should only have registered as a media player only...

It sounds like you're trying to pair BOTH the boom box AND a headset to your phone, correct? As in, playing media via Bluetooth from your phone, but if a call comes in it would then route the audio to your headset?

You're right, this can sound really confusing. Lol

No. Pairing another bluetooth device will not let you make calls through your infotainment. It will still let you hear the caller, but they will not be able hear you.
However, you could pair your phone with a sena, scala, or other Bluetooth headset and complete calls thought the headset. So, the call sounds wouldn't come through the Harley speakers at all. You can do this by changing the settings on infotainment so that it pairs with your phone for media pairing- but not for communications.... After one call from my Mom while riding, I realized I wouldn't want my calls bumping through the Harley speakers anyway.

Or, you get the Harley hard wired headset and go that route.

additional info on BT and phone, I just tried this on my phone, I have a galaxy Note 4, In my phone settings, tap blue tooth, it list your paired devices, tap H-D radio setting icon, it will show "profile" and list a call audio and media audio icon. check the box of what you want transmitted to your Boom. If you have a BT headset device, it can also be paired to the Note 4. you can also select the profile type or its default type if it is call only. I can BT pair multiple devices to my phone simultaneously, however they will only perform a designated profile. example, note 4 music to bike and note 4 to headset for calls incoming/outgoing, this can be done simultaneously via BT on my phone.

Again, this works for my Note 4 and this feature (multiple BT devices) is advertised to work on all Galaxy phone types.

I'm thinking we should be consintrating on driving and not talking on the phone while riding anyway?.... Just a thought.

For those who have some select android phones I understand you can bluetooth pair to two different devices at one time. Henceforth, you can pair a Scala 9 (Example) and your SGS 6.5 infotainment system to your phone at the same time. To the best of my knowledge you can not pair to two different devices at one time with an Iphone.

I have blasted music from my iPhone over the infotainment and received calls via my Sena.... But maybe I'm just super lucky... Or, actually, I plugged my iPhone 5 in via the usb cord (with lightning adapter) for music, and used BT pairing with my Sena headset for comms.

I agree with Crumb. It's nice to have tunes and such but too much driver distraction can spell disaster!

danoday is correct but its all moot for me.
I listen to music while I'm riding . . . answering the phone? NOT going to happen.

I agree...Phone stays in pocket or bag... i'll look at it when i stop.. Isn't that why we ride? Get away from normality and enjoy the open road???? Maybe it's just me.....
