Primary Noise that wasn't normal

One day out of the blue my bike started to have some primary noise. And I jumped on the web, and did a lot of searching. And everything I read said it was normal. My bike had the clunking sounds everyone says is their compensator. But my bike started to have a little whine at start up, and while in gear doing engine braking. But once it was up to full operating temp. it would wouldn't make a noise.

Well I took it in for the 5k service and for the clutch recall, they had to keep it overnight for the recall. Glad they did, cause the next day when they started it, they heard the noise and started to tear into the primary. What the found was that the chain tensioner wasn't working correctly. Even after replacing the tensioner, the chain had stretched too much and had to get a new chain overnighted. They called today, and said it was ready.

If the rain will hold out, I'm going to get it after work. And run her through the paces to make sure everything is OK.

Interesting. Mine used to whine when cruising, I could usually hear it if I was going 20-30 holding a steady speed. However the whine went away after I changed primary oil. I just got a new stator so I sure hope they looked at the chain and tensioner while they were in there.

Did they say anything about the compensator clunk? I hadn't heard any bad news about the newer compensator but I do tend to clunk mine on hard shifts

I know here at the end, when I would start or stop the engine. There would be some nice clunking sounds from the motor and primary. After they changed out my chain and tensioner. Starts and stops smoothly and with no noise. I'm actually fairly amazed that changing those 2 parts. Would make such a drastic difference in the sound of the engine and primary. It sounds like a brand new engine again.

I've had my compensator replaced once. I'm getting ready to take it in for the 30k mile check and have them check the chain tension(er) and the compensator again. I get a lot of "clunking" as I'm starting out and think it might be one or both.....or else I'm just not giving it enough gas...lol.

I just thought the clunking sound was normal, but after a new chain and tensioner replaced. The motor and primary is all quite now. I always had a noise when starting or killing the bike. But now it's all gone.

Aviator5456, what indicators did you have to let you know that your compensator was bad before you had it replaced?

I didn't know I was having issues....I just brought it in for the 15k mile check and a new front tire. I go to pick it up that evening and they showed me the old one and explained what was going on.

The compensator sprocket dampens (reduces) torsional vibration created by the crankshaft so it is not transmitted through the drive-train causing rider discomfort and premature component wear. Basically if you are getting a lot of noise from the left side like rattling, ticking or a bang on startup, then suspect the compensator. Here's a pic of it on the bike, its on the drive mechanism located on the end of the engine main shaft, transferring the engine rotation by way of the primary chain to the clutch basket and transmission. It provides for a smooth transfer of the power to the transmission and takes up any shocks from the transmission to the engine. The other pic is the gear inside the compensator when it starts to fail.
