Isn't there a good speaker that will fit the outside of the pods without having to modify stuff or doing the whole inside pod mounting? I'd rather not cut up the pods if I don't have too.

Not sure what you mean. There are several speakers that don't require modification but you still have to pull the pods because the speaker fastens to it

I installed JBL GTO629's with minimal mod. I used Cycle Sound grills and had to clearance the 3 screw heads( sanded down very little on the plastic ring on speaker in those spots ) where the pod mounts to fairing, and they fit fine. Sound is awesome and very affordable. I will be using JBL for lids as well.

I have the Focal 165 KRC's and They mount outside of the pods with absolutely no modifications. The factory screw holes even line up perfectly. You will need the Harley or JM Corp mesh grills though, as the stock ones don't provide enough clearance.

Yes I understand they have to be pulled to change the speakers. But it seems like all the popular speakers people are using are calling for them to be installed inside the pods (as in separating the actual pods and putting the speaker inside before reinstalling) or cutting and sanding a bunch of stuff before the speaker will install.

Aren't the focal's a little salty in price?

yes the factory speakers are also mounted in the pod so my J&M speakers went in exactly the same you had to drill the Pod and add an extra set of wires because one side of the factory amp drives the Tweeter one side of the amp drives the Main.

No cutting or sanding, just a new deeper grill.

I was under the impression that the stock speakers are mounted on the outside of the pod? That you actually didn't have to open the pods up to replace the speakers. I thought it was just a matter of removing the pods and replacing the speakers? Am I wrong on this?

Mojo / Spaz did a video on this. The backside of the magnet is enclosed in the box while the lip of the speaker where the cone ect is, is screwed into the speaker box. The speaker boxes are screwed into the fairing and fairing support. Removing the boxes is the biggest pain but as long as you have the right tools, its not to bad. Once you remove the boxes just unplug the speaker wires, unscrew the front of the speaker and pull it out. If you replace the grills be mindful to not over tighten as you may thread the screw though the plastic and out the fairing. I hope this clears things up. I am a novice when it come to tinkering on my bike. I watched the video and went to work, its quite easy and i'm an idiot.

I can't speak to others but the J & M just like the OEM, unbolt from the Pod with screws and the new screw back to the pods.

Remove the pods unscrew the speakers put the new speakers in screw the pods back on change the grills while the pods are off

With some speakers you will have to do the mods to the pods no big deal if you have a dremmel tool and the cut off wheel. They have to be mounted inside the pod for clearance. I have the same focal speakers as Spazz and they had to go inside. I wanted to keep the stock look also this was the way to go.
