It's time I have 19K miles on my 14 SGS stocks tires.

I'm going with the Commander II for rear but looks like they dont carry stock size for the front, at least jakewilson.com didn't.

Whats everyone recommend for the front, really prefer matching but if they dont make it guess thats not possible.

flatlander- are you going with the Commander ll because of price? I'm about 5-6k away from re-tiring but I will be sticking with Dunlops, they've served me well plus, my MVP membership knocks $50 ea off tire discount. Not as good as the "Free tires for life" some got but it works . . . . .

I would try the Dunlop American Elite that comes in the stock sizes. It is a better design than the OEM Dunlops IMHO.

They track in the corners well and feel really solid in rain and gravel, couldn't resist workin em hard when new and found myself scratchin the footboards a little. I live in the Colorado foothills, ride canyons and country roads mostly and with our wet weather I have been riding the king more than the new SGS. I replaced the factory Dunlops about 4K early because I was headed for Laughlin so it wasn't the normal difference that you experience going from worn out tires to new ones that always feel better. Had a local indy put em on for $515 out the door which beat the dealers by a couple hundred bucks. Not a very proffesional review but I do like em a lot, YMMV...

I was going with the Commander ll because of all the good reviews I have read here and a few other places.

I have been thinking about buying a priority maintenance plan from a dealer near me, not the dealer I bought the SGS from though, for $1645 for 3 years.
I just called and it also includes replacing the first stock tire.
Even more reason to buy the plan IMO, I'm due for 20K service in under a thousand miles and can also have the tires done.
If they let me pay the difference between stock and Commander II that's what I'll do if not I'll see about Dunlop American Elite for both front & rear tires.
I'll save money in the long run with the priority maintenance plan considering I have 20K miles on it and having the bike for 14 months.

Commander II 's(last time I checked in January) don't have the exact front tire size for the 14's yet

I agree with Hulks since I had a Dunlop Representative in Daytona suggest the same. He said they are also dual compound on rear, but better tread pattern and for the win, it is cheaper. You can buy BOTH the front and rear in the American Elite for $290 the last I checked from JP Cycle.

Just put a set of the stock Dunlop's on at 14,000 on a weekend in Reno rear was getting close. Never thought about trying the elite tire and never asked if they had them. Someone told me that Metzler now has the stock front tire size but haven't checked for myself. Should be good for another 14,000 I hope.

Guess I should be feeling lucky I got 19K with original.
Seeing how the free rear tire replacement under the Four Rivers HD Prefered maint. plan is only the one time I may just get the Elite and try the Commander II next time.

TomA- I have 13,600 on mine and they both look good for another 5-6k

You guys getting more mileage should be happy I ride a lot of straight line highway so I think this may have something to do with it. You can ask Spazz the rear only had 1 thousand's left and the front was at 4 so just do them both and get it over with. Peace of mind is better then sitting along the side of the road waiting for a trailer or tow.

Just my 2 cents.

Wow. That's a lot of miles on a set. I have about 9700 on mine and the rear will need replacing in no more than 1k miles. Been searching for my next brand myself. Might have to check into the elites myself.

TomA- I never thought of it like that. I guess riding curves does spread the wear a bit more evenly. Another factor might be the road surfaces too. We have some of the best roads in America here-I know, I travel enough in other states.

I just had the 10K service done (at 11,000) & the HD tech told me I should look at new tires sooner rather than later. Said the wear indicators were just beginning to show. All along I was planning on going with commander II's but opted to purchase American Elites instead. Strong reviews on the AE's as well and I support the fact that they're made here at home. Plus an Indy is saving me an additional $70 for the install/mount vs the local dealership. I'm sure excellent choices were made all around.
