Warranty question

Does performing basic service on a new bike void warranty?? I took my 14 SGS to my local dealer a few weeks ago for the 1,000 mile checkup and they overfilled the engine to the point where I had oil spitting out of the air cleaner. I checked the oil when I got home and it registered way pass the hot check mark…. Overfilled tranny too! Luckily for me the ride home from the dealer is only 25 miles so I don’t think any damage was done other than a nasty air filter and messy jeans. I'll be doing this task myself from now on and I am told and read somewhere that warranty is good as long as you do them at the proper intervals and keep receipts?? I think there is a log on the back of your owner manual to record services but not sure if that’s for dealer use only. I have done services on my other bikes but only after warranty expired. Any advice?? By the way, the dealer did apologize but I don’t think I’ll be taking my bike there again.

I do my own service, the warranty will be fine as long as you don't make an obvious mistake, keep records, and follow the recommended service guidelines. It's a good idea (usually) to let the dealer do the first service so they can't say you were riding with some problem that they would have corrected if given the chance.

I also do my own but I keep records & receipts and use HD oil filters. I have never under or overfilled mine plus . . . . . I trust me!

My local dealer did the same thing on my 1000 mile check up on my 2015 SGS. It is at another dealer right now cleaning it up and trying to figure out why I'm only getting 34 miles per gallon ever since. The local dealer said they'd send me fifty bucks for the trouble.. They never did, jack-holes.

As per the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act, they can not deny warranty for you doing your own service.

Gunner is absolutely correct about the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. As a reseller / manufacturer of aftermarket products we are asked about this quite often, especially on performance-type upgrades such as slip-ons and I often refer folks to the following link on the FTC website that clearly outlines the Act and what the consumers rights are in regards to warranties.

Hopefully this helps answer your questions @hulkss.

It is amazing how many Warranty Myths are floating around out there regarding what "might" void warranties.

It truly is pretty amazing @Mojo...I'm not necessarily one who believes in 'conspiracy theories' but it does blow my mind the amount of calls and/or emails that we receive from folks who have been told by a dealer that any modification done to a motorcycle that is not a HD branded product will void the warranty. Certainly begs the question as to what the dealerships service / parts departments true motives are in this regard and whether these motives are in the best interest in the customer who has chosen to invest his/her hard earned money with their dealership...

I agree IronAces- I think its a combination of misinformation and HD staff not properly trained.
