Hi Guys!
I would like to know if anyone else is having the same Starter issue that I am. Using the search I found a little info, but not enough to get my dealer to fix it before the warranty (extended) runs out.
I have a 2011 Street Gide with the factory 103ci upgrade (“Stage 1+”). Whenever I go for a ride long enough to require refueling, I have an issue with the Starter.
If I fuel my scooter up, go and pay for the fuel and return to the bike to leave the gas station the starter has an issue. After fueling, I throw my leg over the scoot, turn my switch to run, press the start switch and that’s when **** gets weird.
When the starter button is pressed there is a brief grinding sound followed by a cluck and then, if I keep my starter switch pressed, it slowly cranks and starts.
If I let off the starter switch and push it again, it starts normally.
The higher the ambient temperature is, the worse this issue is.
If the bike is shut off hot and restarted right away, it starts normally.
Of the three 2011 – 2012 103ci H-D scooters (mine and friends bikes), two have the exact same issue.
My bike has 8,860 miles on it (I know, I know… 2011 with only 8,860 miles, WTF. I was in an auto accident that kept me from riding for a few years). The 2012 Street Glide that belongs to my friend (with the same starter issue) has around 40,000+ miles on it.
Are any of you having the same issues with what I would call “Heatsink” (hot day, hot bike, bike let sit for 2 – 10 minutes and restarted) where the starter is not working properly when hot?
My “Extended Warranty” will run out next June. I’m in Minnesota. “Hot” days are getting hard to find between now and the end of my warranty. I’ve run this by the dealer. He said it worked just fine when running on the Dyno. I’ve called back to let him know the scoot is still having issues. His suggestion, bring it back in…
Sorry to drag on! I just wanted to see if we are the only two with this issue. If we are not, what have you done (or had done) to address the issue?
Thank you,
Willie
