bullet antenna produces noisy/distorted radio

Hello, I put a bullet ant on my wifes 17 SGS. The radio became noisy/distorted and could hardly hear it. HD ant back on cleared up. Stubby back on went to noisy and distorted. Placed my hand closer to the ant and the static went away. I'm at a loss. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like it isn't tall enough to get a good enough reception. By placing your hand near or on it, it used your body as an extension of the antenna and thus, providing a cleaner signal.
