Hi Guys,

I wanted to see what everyone opinions are regarding purchasing a used SGS. I am in the Northern Virginia area due to my work after the Marine Corps, but dont mind traveling or shipping out of state. Probably will use Ebay Motors to buy a used Glide as Texas has the cheapest prices I have seen by far. Want to see what the big difference is between the 15 and 16. I understand 17s have the Mil 8 engine and new suspensions etc. Is the 15 and 16s the same? Id rather get a used one that already has a slip on or full system and stage 1 but I dont mind getting one without it if the price is decent and adding the upgrades myself. Curretnly coming from a 08 CBR1000 and this will be my first Harley. I test rode the SGS and a softtail and felt like the Softtail is a crotch rocket again and absoltley loved the feeling of a glide.

Edimean , Thank you for your service!! Welcome to the forum, There,s a lot of experience on here, I just got a mint 2014 SGS I think the changes are minimal from Rushmore 2014 up til the 2017 M8
I have friends with Ultra clasics and 103 with well over 80K with no issues. If your not interested in the M8 you should be able to find some good deals on these bikes, Depending on location the going price for a SGS seems to be around 16K to 22K.. Good luck There,s also salvage bikes or repos out there.

I would wait until the season is over and get a M8 engine. Skip all the stage 1 and save it up for the 114 upgrade.

Not much difference between a 14 and 16 models and depending where you look. 14,000 to 18,000 depending on how many upgrades from what has come across this site and I know if you look in the for sale section there is a few there. Have seen several for take over payments or pay off so someone can upgrade or get out from under.

Good luck in your search and keep us posted

Thanks guys, I heard from other riders that riding 2015 is completely different than riding 2014. I would rather get the 15 honestly as it would be cheaper than the 17s and up. Budget cant go above 16k. If anyone sees one let me know. Been looking at some aftermarket stuff for it already. Its not cheap owning a Harley lol.

None of these Specials are cheap.. You should find some deals with these Newer Mt Rushmore bikes due to some trading in for the Newer Simpler M8 Engine.

I found a 2015 SGS with only 1000 miles on it in April this year. A 80 year old guy didn't like the electronics on it and decided to keep riding his 1993. The engine is stock but he had aftermarket seats, windshields, luggage rack, saddle bag, saddle bag crash bars etc. He even had a special paint color upgrade. I added slip ons. He put the 1000 miles on it and it sat from September of 2015 until April 2017. Compared to my 96ci engine on my 2012 that Rushmore 103 is all the power I need even riding two up even up hills. The only thing I'm going to eventually change when the extended warranty is up ( 4 years left on it) is header pipes to get rid of the cats and ditching the rear shocks. My only complaint is even with the adjustable rear shocks at 225lb body weight on the lightest setting its still a rough ride. It actually rides better two up. I don't think you can go wrong with a 2015.

I'd also look at your local Craiglist that's where I found mine. The guy that had it needed to get out of the payments after 11 months and I was able to save over 10k on one with 700 miles.

I paid his note off but to be safe I'd recommend using Harley's rider to rider program. It cost $400 up front but they inspect the bike handeled the transaction and can offer financing if you need it.

The dealer that did mine also gave me back $200 in a dealership gift card to help with the accessories.

Thanks
Greg

From a recently retired Detective definitely be careful with Craig's list. Major scams on Harley Davidson sales etc. My next door neighbor even got taken. Not sure what the rider to rider program is but if they assume responsibility that the sale is legit and the bike is not stolen it would be worth the $400. I drove this guy to the bank and watched him pay off the bike in front of me and the sign the title over before we left the building. LOL

Ken,
Agreed that is exactly why I suggested the rider to rider program. I was paying off the previous owners note. I did not want to give him a check and assume he would pay it. With the program they verify the VIN and owner. Check for liens. Inspect the bike for defects. Then process the funding or in my case I was paying off the note but they can also provide a loan if necessary from HD Finance. Bottom line is it cost me $200 after the gift card but they assumed responsibility for the transaction and condition of the bike and was well worth it in my mind.

I paid less than half what a new one would have cost due to someones need to get out from under a payment. The dealer bought my trade and even handled the transfer of the warranty.

I felt it was a safe way to purchase from Craigslist. Don't think i would have done it any other way.

Thanks
Greg

Sounds like a good plan and well worth the money. I saved about 10 grand on my bike too going used. With only 1000 miles the engine it was a brand new bike still.
