I've been wrestling with the seating issue since I got my 2016 FLHXS... With my Wide Glide there was no issue, I just threw on a Mustang seat, and my butt thanked me... With the touring models it's not so simple!
The stock seating position is perfect for me, I can reach all the controls and flat-foot at a stop. On the touring models, all the Mustang seats either move you forward, or sit you back. The stock seat already feels like I'm almost on the gas tank, so I asked Mustang what seat moves you back the least - to which they pointed me toward the Super Solo seat, and accompanying passenger seat for my 'ol lady. While the passenger seat is way better than stock for my 'ol lady, the rider seat sits me back about 1.5" and sits me higher by at least an inch. Now my arms arms are locked outright to reach the bars, and I only have the balls of my feet on the ground at a stop and I hate it - although my butt doesn't ache as much on long rides (I ride up to 6-7 hours a day on the weekends, when I can). I called Mustang to see if they had anything else more suitable, and they said all their seats will sit you higher then stock, and move you forward or back - except their 'low' seat, which drops you a half inch but still moves you forward, and unfortunately looks like it has no padding to speak of. I couldn't bare throwing more money at another Mustang to see if it would fix my problems, so I looked into the Ultra Seats.
I initially looked at Ultra because I saw some great reviews, but the more I dug into it, the more I found mixed reviews. People either absolutely love, or absolutely hate the Ultra Seats (on Harleys - on V-Stars they're simply amazing by all accounts for example, but from what I found Ultra blames the shape of the Harley seating area for not being able to make a seat that everyone finds perfectly comfortable on the Harley touring models). The reviews on the Ultra Seats specifically for touring Harleys were more mixed than the reviews for Mustangs on touring models so I decided to not even try to venture down that path...
And finally that leaves me with Mean City Cycles, or a Corbin seat. I mean I could take my stock seat to a local shop to get modified, but that would be a total crap shoot - I like being able to extensively research my motorcycle purchases. Since I don't have a money tree in my backyard, Corbin was out, so I looked into Mean City Cycles. I found a few mixed reviews, most of the negative ones were years ago (circa 2008), and all of the newer ones I could find were mostly gleaming, with many saying they've had multiple seats done by them over the years... I finally e-mailed back and forth with them a few times, and I actually boxed up my seat and sent it off to them today!
I'm shipping it over to them via 2-day air, I am paying for express service, and included an overnight return shipping label, so I should have the seat back by the middle of next week. I'll post back my (and the 'ol lady's) initial impressions once I get it back on the bike.
I'm hoping I'll love it so I can throw this damn Mustang seat set on eBay!
