Dealership refused to install new tires on my stock wheels

Has anyone ever ran into problems with the dealership refusing to install tires on wheels unless they remove and reinstall the wheels on the bike?

I took my wheels into the dealership to have new tires (which I purchased from the dealership on the spot) installed and they told me that they don't do tire changes if the customer has removed the wheels themselves. I asked why and was told it was because they had done it once for a customer and the guy reinstalled the wheels himself, changed his oil while he was at it, forgot to put tranny fluid in the bike and went for a ride, during which the tranny locked up, causing him to crash and lose his life. I though that was the craziest story I had ever heard. I don't see what one thing has to do with the other. It sounds to me like this particular dealership wants to get the customer for more money in the form of labor charges. What else could it be? Thankfully, my buddy is a certified HD mechanic and has a tire changer and balancer at his shop and I was able to get it done.

I don't have a lift to remove my wheels, but one dealer here (4 miles from me) is picky. They want everything to be done by them. Chandler Harley (12 miles from me) will install tires I bring in. Scottsdale Harley (20ish miles from me) seems be be open to anything as I saw a guy drop off his wheels for tire change.

Every dealer is a little different. It's annoying though cause depending on where I take it, I can literally walk home or I can be stuck there waiting.

I buy my tires online and take my wheels and tires to a bike shop I have dealt with for many many years. I have always figured that changing and balancing a tire did not require different skills for different wheels. I always start with " You want scratch the rims will ya". Get really good prices both ways.
I personally would have just ask for a refund on the tires and went elsewhere.
I hope that dealership doesn't get on the pro gun control kick using their logic.
 
We live in a litigious world. Every business has the ability and privilege to make policy based upon that, and other factors.

I used to buy tires from a large aftermarket parts company. They had a policy involving that based upon a larger picture that conflicted with my personal policy. No big deal. I found a small independent whose company policy was in line with my personal policy. I now do business with him.

Easy peasy.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. I just figured something so simple could have been handled at the dealer which was only 15 min. away from my residence, but as tuned out, I ended up driving 2 hours round trip to have them mounted at my buddy's shop.
 
Yup....I had the same thing with a part covered under warranty. If I installed it, they wouldn't warrant it. That decision comes all the way from Wisconsin....
