Not sure where to post this but last year I hit a pothole...a deep pothole....in Long Beach, Ca. I was doing about 25-30 mph in heavy traffic and there was a 6 inch utility access in the left groove of the street. The asphalt had been eaten up by all the heavy trucks in that area, leaving an 8 inch deep hole 2-3' across with a 6 inch pipe sticking up in the middle. By the time I saw it, it was too late to maneuver. I hit it so hard it almost knocked me off the bike. I immediately pulled over, thinking I had done serious damage, blew the front tire or something. A thorough inspection showed no obvious damage. I was surprised.
Several months later I had to have the valve stems replaced and the tech discovered the front wheel bent. He also noticed the rear of the font fender had impact damage on the lower half as evidenced by slight wrinkling in the surface. I have the HD Extended warranty with wheel and tire protection...something I thought I'd never use. They told me to take it to the dealer for inspection and adjustment. That's another (long) story for another day and one I'm not looking forward to repeating....never will understand why dealers have to lie to their customers.
I had previously ran into a good deal on eBay with a new 2016 takeoff wheel and tire. Apparently a new owner decided he wanted upgraded wheels and tires so the dealer sold this set dirt-cheap. I couldn't resist.
Soooo....rather than have the warranty buy me a NEW wheel and NEW tire, I asked if they would "purchase" mine for the cost of a new wheel and tire...and rotors. They agreed, which was a total surprise to me. The insurance rep was absolutely fantastic and the warranty, while on the expensive side, was well worth it. They even got me an Uber ride to a car rental agency and paid for the rental the entire week the dealer had the bike.... Besides this HD dealer, the only thing I'm disappointed in is the warranty doesn't pay for body parts so I'm stuck with a slightly bent front fender. Overall, I give the insurance rep 5 stars, the insurance itself 3.5 stars....
