I'm planing a trip to Going to the sun road by end of July. I've 5 days off. It's only 400 miles from where I live, so will take 1 day to get there and 1 day to come back. That leaves me 3 days to ride around in that area. I was wondering if anyone here has been there and would like to give me ideas, so that I can make the best of those 3 days.

Going to the Sun Road is a scenic highway in Glacer National Park in Montana. It's about 50 miles of spectacular scenery at 6k-7k feet. I have driven this road and highly recommend it. Montana offers great riding opportunities and for those of us in the northern states the access easy and a great opportunity. Also check out Yellowstone Park and the Bear Tooth Pass into Red Loge Montana.

The fun thing if you have 3 extra days would be to drop down and do bear tooth and chief Joseph highways also. They are both bucket list rides and you get yellow stone while your at it. Did the highway to the sun last year then dropped back down and did bear tooth. Are you riding by yourself or with a group ??

I'll be riding by myself. fullsizeoutput_709.jpg

I plan on to ride from Omak, WA to Missoula MT to Sun Rd to Red Lodge thru Yellowstone back Home. Total Miles close to 1900.

You have to give a ride report now to see how it turns out for you. And yes stay up on the weather and road reports. Staying in McCall Idaho right now and it's been raining and had some snow Saturday.

Check road conditions for Chief Joseph as part of the road was damaged earlier in May this year. This might cause traffic delays and road conditions that might not be good for motorcycle travel.

If the conditions are bad I might delay it by a month. I'm also planning to go to Crater Lake (AUg) sequoia National Park(Sep) San Antonio (OCT). Might just change that order and try going to sun road in august and move crater lake in July.

I just got back from 4000 mile trip 3 weeks ago. Rode from Beckley, WV to Myrtle beach, SC to Omak WA across country.

I see a part of going to the sun road is still closed, when do you guys think it will open? I have a trip planned there the week of July 4th.

It's been a funny year for weather so I would check to see as it gets closer to your trip. It's still been snowing in the higher elevations in Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana over the last couple of weeks.
