Hey hows everyone doing? I have a friend with a 2010 HD Touring. He had an oil leak last season and brought it to dealer for repair more than a month ago. The dealer told him, a few days ago, they needed to replace the stator and are having trouble getting one. How is the stator affected by oil leak and is it that difficult to get a replacement stator.

The stator power cable has an oil seal molded onto it where it passes through the primary chain case housing. Maybe it was leaking there.

Thanks was wondering where the leak could be. Last year when we were riding, I would smell trans fluid smell pretty strong from his bike. Is the engine oil pushing into the primary then pushing into tranny? You can smell that strong moly smell.
Has anyone heard where a factory stator is hard to get? Will an HD dealer consider using aftermarket parts if they can't get factory?

Not too long ago my stator went bad as well as the rectifier/regulator. I replaced both from Cycle Electric. I had a great experience talking to them and they sent me to a distributor near me. One of the things I like about their kit is that it relocates the rectifier/regulator away from some of the heat.

As for the engine oil, I'm pretty sure that the only place that could leak into the primary is at the main seal. I just had to replace that too. If I am not mistaken, there are two seals between the transmission and the inner primary. One keeps fluid in the transmission and the other keeps fluid in the primary. (I think that is how it is set up. I haven't had to screw with that yet.)

By the way, the main seal replacement was not a bad job at all. I got the Jims USA seal removal/seating tool and that made it quite easy.

Ride safe.
