Lowers Are they really Worth It?

First bike I had with lowers was a '96 Ultra Glide. Liked them so much, I decided to try them on my '05 Electra Glide Classic, Took them off the next day and unless it starts snowing or raining every day here I have absolutely no intention of ever going back to them. Why? Because of the heat build up. I'm in Hawaii and quite often ride with shorts and slippers. The lowers change the way air circulates around the engine, not too noticeable at highway speeds but shear misery in traffic or at slower speeds. Even with jeans on the heat build up was really uncomfortable to ride in. All the lowers seemed to do anyways was slow down the rate my legs got wet at when it rained.

Law of physics plus Hawaii humidity and heat. I probably wouldn't want them either!

I'm living in Singapore with avg temperature of 33-34 degree or year round and some rain seasons in between, nevertheless, I still have the lower installed because I don't like buffering on my leg and I guess accustom to the weather here...hahaa

So i'm keeping them. I already put on the magnetic glove box doors and Friday off to the painters they went, the only problem is, i don't know when he'll be done with them..

Can I ask what the painter charged to paint for you?

When I had my after market units painted, it took a month to get them back and $275 for color match. TomA has them now. My 2017 has OEM's on it because I figured out I really didn't save anything by the time I bought them, paid S&H and had them painted!

I just installed a color matched set from Advan Black. The color is spot on, but I absolutely hate the door & push button mechanism, it has a cheap crappy feel to it...

I'm planning to replace them with speaker pods down the road anyway... But at this point I don't know if I'm keeping them, or send them back and a shell out the $$$$ for set from H-D?

Older style had rounded vent doors and the new one are either plumbed for radiators or have a flat panel in place of the screen.
I had Factory Fairing brand on my 2014 but the cost plus shipping plus painting didn't really save me any Money (Black is a different story). When my M8 came in I had ordered OEM's for it and had them installed. I personally like them and protection from rain they offer.

I was contemplating on if I should get hard lower fairings due to hot summer heat where I live, then after riding to work few times early in the morning during winter I have decided to go ahead with it. Not only because of cold wind, also rocks on the freeway, I was hit with couple of flying small rocks. I only travel 15 minutes so I don't feel like wearing a chaps plus hard lower fairings looks good on the bike..... :)

Now my concern is during summer, I am sure it'll get very hot, even now when I stop at the lights I can feel heat building up. Is there a fan that doesn't cost first born child for our bikes? Any thoughts on fans below?

Or does this fan works better?

BlkDragon- Kuryakin makes a metal mesh/chrome grill kit that allows you to remove the filler plate and snap in the grills for summer cooling. That's what I do. Expensive but worth it- if you don't like chrome, you can paint them blk!

I don't think it'll work with the one I have as it's not HD brand, I got it off eBay....and the ones I purchased have vents where I can partially open or wide open. I am not worry about while my bike is moving, just when I am at the traffic lights.....I just have to ride on freeways and avoid traffic lights..... LOL!

You're correct- they WON"T fit non OEM's as I tried them on my 2014 with Factory Fairing brand lowers.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy an Ultra Limited from the start then to turn a Street glide into one?

No way. You have way more options with a Street Glide with detachables and what not, and you can build it to your specs at just about half the cost..

Iron Horse- When I put the hard lowers on my 2014 in Feb. I took off the fork deflectors. I found later leaving them ON along with the hard lowers helped buffeting that the hard lowers create. So in answer to your question-I have both on the scoot now. I now have an extra set to sell.
Hey Mojo..surprised that the hard lowers created any turbulence at all. I'm getting ready to order some "fork fangs" but haven't taken the plunge for the painted hard lowers yet. I just added the fairing deflectors but still windy to me.
