Radio reception

Anybody know how to improve it? Like the days of old when we could "trim" our car antennas? I have the base model radio with the short antenna on a 14 SG. Reception is lousy to say the least.

I have the inner fairing antenna installed before pick up and sometimes it works good and most of the time not so good. I live in the middle of the state and we don't have any stations close. When I get into bigger cities it will work ok depending on where the station is at.

Good luck

I just put an HD hidden antenna on my bike in preparation for the installation of the tour pack. I now show two bars for signal strength, but I can already tell that reception has been degraded ever since the install.

I've had the fairing antenna since day one and you're right, signal strength is not good but I never listen to over the air reception anymore so it's a moot point for me.

We're stuck with what we got? To be honest though, I'm kinda tired of the radio already. Another method to blast me with their bull****. Think I'll work on the Bluetooth method.

Thanks for your help.

I have a 2014 SGS and I'm very disappointed with the HD Boom radio reception. I inquired about it @ the dealership only to be told the inner fairing antenna option really doesn't deliver much better performance for the money to upgrade.. The real upgrade is to add the Sirius radio module ($$$) but until then I Bluetooth my Cell with Pandora and it works great!

Thinking of going that route. But I like to listen to the Red Sox games (am freq) and that's worse than the fm side!

Slingshot383, I believe my HD hidden antenna is amplified, as it requires a power source. If I unplug the power connector it doesn't get any reception. Do you have a link to the power amplifier that you're talking about?

I have a 2016 SGS and I took the stock antenna and did the hidden antenna mod and I still get pretty good reception. I don't listen to the radio that much, but it works pretty good for me.

I still use the stock antenna but have it turned around and run it under the fender and seat. I only bought a $3 plug to cover the hole and I had to bend the mounting bracket but it wasn't hard. My reception is good but I live in the city, as I get further away on trips I drop stations as I get out of range. I switch over to my ipod if I don't like whats on the radio or if I loose signal. Around town it's fine though.

I did the same thing and still get crap for radio signals and I live in SoCal....I just do the USB thing....

Yeah, having the usb makes it easy. I am lucky that I don't have issues around town other than some Canadian stations. In Detroit there are a few high power rock stations so it makes it nice for the ride in to work.

I am west of Chicago. The reception is spotty at best. I rely on the iPod. I have also run my antenna up the frame of the bike like many others.

I also have my antenna ran up under the seat and it is terrible if 15 miles out of town. I use iHeart radio!

Tried DIY hidden antenna under the seat trick and got no reception at all. Bought a shorty antenna for the local auto parts store and that didn't work much better. Running the HD inside the fairing hidden antenna now, at first it seemed to work pretty good but over time it's gotten worse. Here's the rub, when I tried the DIY hidden antenna trick it actually damaged the coating on the antenna, almost cut it in two from rubbing on something about half way along it's length. I actually finished cutting it and installed a small cap on the exposed tip and it worked the best out of everything I tried. Shorter then the original and way better reception then the HD hidden one I paid upwards of $60 for.

Didn't they use to sell a "suppressor" or something that went in-line on the antenna cable to reduce engine static?

Aw....now you're showing your age, lol. They still do have suppressors but they're not used as much due to the gains in shielding of cables and radios, alternators...anything that can produce noise. If those components are properly shielded, and you have the latest in cables, you don't need a suppressor.
