Happy Thanksgiving Folks,
I was reading some old threads about violent vibration on the back left side of Harleys. I found a cause not mentioned and stopped the culprit. Most replies said it was the nature of the Beast.
Trying to figure out what was causing such a violent vibration that sounded like it was destroying the bike I started trouble shooting and ended up measuring the bottom saddlebag rails with a straight plane from the outside of the guard rail to the bracket it is welded to that attaches to the frame. The problem rail had 1/8th inch less length than the other side and 2 other rails I checked. This leaves no gap between the saddlebag and the bracket which is the source of the problem. Contacted customer support to get another rail and put a temporary 1/16th inch rubber washer between the saddlebag contact point and the bracket and the problem was immediately corrected. Idles and runs smooth now.
Just in case you have a similar problem definitely check this area before thinking it is normal.
