In reviewing the Deer whistles, sound like they don't really work.

Its that Dusk and Dawn thing to watch out for I guess.

"The accident occurred a little before 6 a.m. Thursday, about three miles south of Chadron on U.S. Highway 385. The Nebraska State Patrol says a group of motorcyclists were headed north when three of them struck deer that had wandered onto the roadway."

Its questionable whether they work or not. Several studies have been done, none conclusive. One study was in NY with a Sherriff's Department where they mounted 55 patrol cars with the devices. Before the installation there were 10 incidences a year, after there were 7. Other studies show no effectiveness.

The best defense is an effective offense....don't ride in the early evenings when deer are the most active and early mornings.

Well I'm not sure if it just happens by chance or by timing during the early or later hours. Went camping last week end and on Sunday at about 1:20 PM we were traveling home me pulling a 34ft 5th wheel and I see something in the road ahead of me. Thinking crows or possibly buzzards working on something hit the night before. As I slow down to avoid getting hit in the windshield by a buzzard I get closer and no it's not a bird but something else. Get a little closer and relies it's a helmet and notice the rider laying in the other lane. I was going down the middle of the road trying to avoid any contact when I noticed the rider and avoided any contact and got stopped a 150ft past him. Went back and gave as much aid as we could. Rider was ok but will be healing for the next year or so but he was doing about 75 to 80 when he hit the deer trying to catch up to his buddies. I could not tell what kind of bike he was riding because of the damage to the bike.

Thinking someone had pushed the deer out of hay field and brush they were bedded in as 7 more of them crossed the road 5 minutes after we arrived. So you just never know what will happen so pay attention to your surrounding at all times. I have ridden this road a bunch of times without incident but I know there are deer and antelope all the time.

I have a buddy who was hit by a deer in Yellowstone. He was coming around a corner in the afternoon with his wife following him on her bike. The deer came out of nowhere jump right over the guard rail into his right side. Broke both bones in leg, got infected to where they had to leave it open for a month. The smell was horrible. Took over a year for him to heal and get back on a bike. So please pay careful attention to all your surroundings. Live to ride.

I use to live North of Springfield, Mo and every evening about dusk the deer would start running across the highways. After sunset, we avoided the roads as much as possible and if there was a car in front of us, it was even worse as the deer would get scared from that car and after it passed they would dart across the highway, usually in front of the second car. I've hit a number of deer but luckily I had a very tall truck and it would just run over them. Most of the time they would just be stunned. I'm scared to death about hitting one on my bike. I can't imagine what would happen.

I live in PA, and we have an enormous deer population! It's very important to remain vigilant during dusk and dawn hours, but ALSO during hunting seasons! Deer will pop out of the most inconspicuous places! Be careful out there bros!

It will soon be one-year since my 2014 SGS was a total loss after hitting a deer. It must have been running, cause I didn't see it coming. By God's grace is the only reason I'm still around. Now have over 6K on the 2015 SGS and I'm not digging Bambi these days. Still love to ride but be careful out there guys.

I was running about 65 in the middle of the day, when I crested a hill, and as my vision saw what was over the rise, there were two does in my lane. Each one was butt to butt looking for the source of my exhaust. We spotted each other at the same time and before I could begin to brake one ran left and the other ran right. I had a deers butt just miss my left and right handle bar. It scared me so bad I did not ride for a week. I have hit two with my truck. I know a lady who used the deer whistles on her car for a couple of years. They did NO good. She lives in a heavily populated area where deer cross alot. Best advice is to stay alert, especially if you are familiar where they are crossing.

Thanks CrBear! Has anyone tried this "electronic deer avoidance system"?

I met a guy at the local HD dealer that swears it makes deer in the roadside fields look up and step back when he switches it on.

I've done a lot of research on "deer avoidance devices" and there are the air operated ones that don't start operating until you get above 35 mph and the electronic one. From my research, none of them work. What was interesting in all the studies, no one ever did a study on deer hearing. Can they even hear in the range of sound these devises put out?....Best advice is just be alert and be careful.
