Value of this bike

Not a street glide, but can you guys give me some opinions of what you think this bike is worth? It started as a '96 heritage softtail. In 2006 it was stripped to the frame and rebuilt from the ground up to what you see here. An S&S motor was installed at that time. The bike is flawless. With a good cleaning it could hit the show circuit. A freind of mine bought it at an estate auction. It is supposed to have less than 1000 miles since the overhaul in 2006. It runs great. Pulls harder than my SG.

I have a chance to buy it, but have no idea what it's worth. He has receipts from 2006 showing the sidecar and paint job alone close to $20k.

IMO although it looks very nice, it's only as valuable as the purchasing person feels. Sidecar & paint job equals 20K, motor & tranny 10K, everything else 5K. Offer him 30 and see where that goes.

Building a custom bike or car is always time consuming if you do it yourself and expensive to have someone else do it. To try and value a custom build is tough, the builder typically never gets a high return on investment if any at all. You could ask for a build sheet, see if they used quality parts from quality retailers, assembled by quality mechs. Was the bike built by a reputable builder? Another aspect of value is how desirable is it, is there a demand for that custom type? Most of the time, market value is well below investment value. So how much are you willing to pay a man for a custom 2006 heritage with a sidecar. The best value indicator is the heart, if someone loves it and wants it, they will empty their pockets to have it. It's like prices of art work, trying rationalize value, doesn't pass a typical assessment test.

Before you do anything make sure it has a clear title. If it does not, then walk away. Unless, you are willing to jump through hoops with your state tag agency. I bought a chopper from a guy with all the Manuf.of Origins, build sheets, blah, blah. It took me 16 months to get a Georgia tag.....long story.

Thanks guys. Keep 'em coming. It does have a clear title. I'd like to get a few more unbiased opinions on value before I reveal how much he wants for it. I know you can't just go the KBB. If I buy it, I'd like be fairly comfortable that I can sell it and not lose any money.

I would approach this bike just like a "Street Rod" from a value standpoint. I live in a town where we have literally 1000's of these cars as we are a big retirement (early retirement) community and one thing that every hot rodder who has sold a car knows is that if you built it you will NEVER get your money back unless it is one of the "Iconic" groups of cars........Vettes, 55-57 Chevys, 55-57 T-Bird, etc......the rest are only as good as the work and the quality of the components used and even then if you can get 60 - 70% of your investment back you are KILLING IT!!

Now I would opine that the 96 Heritige is in no way an "Iconic" Harley and while the addition of a sidecar is unique it is also not really practical and as such does not have a huge following (read demand). I would not pay more than $12 - 15K for that bike and while that's more than the amount he spent recently it doesn't change the value it will bring in the resale market.........My .02

I agree Paul65k, I think if you wanted a base $$ starting point, you could probably figure the retail value of an 06 heritage with xxx milage and the retail value of a sidecar of that quality , priced separately. That in my opinion, is only a starting point to determine the value as separate items.

Have you ever driven one of those? I can think of nothing worse.

Well, maybe, but not worse by much.

Nice looking bike.
I read the original post and the first figure (resale value) popped into my head was $18k.
My biggest concern is mounting a Hack on a Softail. I am of the camp that thinks it should not be done. The Softail is a lighter platform meant for a sporty look. I personally do not think the handling, stability, braking power, and ride qualities of the Softy are as suitable for a Hack as compared to those same features on a Bagger.

Was me, I'd pass on the whole deal.

Well it is a nice looking ride, but as already said it is a softtail and wasn't really designed for such a set up. It may be worth about 15k in my opinion since there isn't a real big out cry for such a thing. I wouldn't personally pay my than about 12k for it. Since it is more of a novelty. Just my two cents

So here's the deal. He bought the bike at auction for $12,500 and that's what he wants out of it. I think I'm going to pass for a few reasons. 1. It's a softtail. 2. Sidecars aren't really my thing. 3. Looking for a three wheeler for the wife, but there's no way she can ride a sidecar bike.

I agree with Paul and Danonday. The bike is only worth market value and the sidecar is worth only market value. Together they do not add value. There is no iconic or vintage value here. They look nice and may have been restored nicely but they are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I was in the custom car and van world for several years. I've put thousands in a car/van/truck and well above that in engines. They look fantastic and run like a bat out-a-hell, but they are only worth market value. Having said that, IF someone comes along with more money than brains and LOVE what they see and just HAVE to have it then they will pay willingly the price to be seen in that vehicle for the "head turn" effects.

Like before, just my .02

I think Side Cars are pretty cool when you got a pooch that can ride in there with a Snoopy Helmet and goggles.........fun to take to a show but riding.....not so much :D

I hope the guy that replied first about a 30000 dollar value is around when I sell my bike.I struggled to get 4900 out of my 94 heritage and it was clean with low miles.10-12 would be tops in my opinion.
