I have the 2014 Street Glide Special. A lot of people think the 6.5 boom radio/GPS is not that great and the GPS lacks today's technology. For me, I like having the GPS and radio all in one with less "things" attached to the handlebars. Less distractions. The GPS works fine for me and I like it. After you learn the system and menus it is easy. My only dislike with the 6.5 Boom system is that it is not truly Bluetooth. The radio/GPS will not transmit via bluetooth to a different headset or intercom system and Harley doesn't even offer one. With that said would I spend the money again on the Street Glide Special for the Boom, yes.

I agree, it works for me. I added the corded headset connection.

Upgrading to the 6.5 unit is not going to be cheap though. If all you're really looking for is to have a GPS added, it would be much more cost effective to just get a unit and mount it to your bars.

I have a 2014 FLHX with the 4.3" Radio, I was going to get the 6'5" boom radio but for $1800 plus $149 per gps upgrade I went with the Road Tech Zumo 660 (made by Garmin) free lifetime upgrades $649.95. Also I added the Road Tech Handlebar Mount $134.95.
If you want XM radio you could get the Road Tech Zumo 665 for $799.95.
I like the Zumo because I can take it off & into my motel room and program it for the next days ride if I want or I can use it in my car.
I bought (Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013) & export files from it to my computer then import them to my Zumo.
The Navigation directions will sound through my radio speakers after I added a "AUTO JACK JUMPER" (P/N 69200610). $38.67
The Harley tech had to hook up the Digital Tech to set some parameters to enable the aux audio input.

If you upgrade to the 6.5 is cutting required on the inner fairing so it will fit?

Hoczero, I will give my opinion, I have a 14 SGS with 6.5 boom. both 4.3 and 6.5 Boom systems are Bluetooth "receive" only ( not transmit or both). If cost is a concern, you have a few options to GPS, I have a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, 5.7 inch screen. It will transmit my sirius xm radio app, amazon music app or any stored mp3 file. as well as, incoming calls to my Boom (heads set bluetooth to phone) ring audio out only (no mic on SGS). with all that said, you probably own a smart phone that can give you all the gps features you want and then some and you have the portability of a one device for everything. you can also purchase a usb to av jack cable for other audio options.

ps. google voice command on the phone with a bluetooth headset/mic is a real nice hands free operation for navigation on the fly.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick replay guys, appreciate your opinions and time.

Hoczero- danoday and JMeadows had some good alternatives. The 6.5's are starting to show up on eBay and other forums where people are selling for around $700 -ish & up. Not sure the wiring harness is the same for both though. Yes HD's technology is not the latest, a good iPhone6+ or Galaxie in a holder would be a good option with a BT headset. I've mentioned this before but I still find the best option for me is plugging my iPhone via USB and Bluetooth between phone and BT headset. As far as the $1,950 (w/HD upload & 6.5 unit) that's good trade-in money on a FLHXS ! ! ! ! Just thinkin outloud here . . . .

I say leave it alone for a couple of months. You'll then see a double-din inner fairing hit the market and you can put whatever aftermarket head unit in you want. Kenwood units are known to be some of the best for performance, features, etc. not to mention I think the only aftermarket that incorporates Garmin GPS into them.
