Flash EQ Files for Boom audio HU's- a few details

There are still many debates with which flash is THE BEST... I don't think there is a definitive answer... as it seems each bike will take the inputs/configuration choices given thru Digital Technician ( DT ) slightly different for some reason.

The latest firmware update also seems to UNLOCK certain aspects and functions when using a particular flash confguration that would be used with an older version of firmware.... I wish I had more time to spend on DT with my guys at HD... but I am hesitant to hook back up and jack my system up and not get it back to where I am....which rocks right now.

I am all about trying to figure this stuff out, but with every firmware upgrade ( minor or major ) AND the updates that are given to DT.... its an ever-changing battle.

I will try to get down to HD today to talk to my guys on whats their take on the latest update and issues with DT at the present.

What would have been interesting if I would have checked the .bin before the 1.19.0 flash and see if that changed but sadly I didn't and I assume some of the major updates have included new .bin's in the flash. This is why I feel doing a reset to defaults has advantages after a flash. But yea there is so much unknown with all of this and seems trial and error right now is the only way to figure things out sadly.

I have 128 OFF with the engine off and 128 ON with the engine running.
What exactly does the ON and OFF part mean? Is it as simple as engine
off or on, does it mean the head unit amp is off or on?

I know there is a lot going on with the engine running, engine noise ,vibration and exhaust noise,
but it just does not sound as clean as it does with the engine off. Might just be in my head.

There are MANY grey areas in this topic... MANY!!! This is one that I cannot find answers to. The one thing I can tell you ( now owning a 14SGS with 18.3 and flashed... AND... a 15RGS with 19.1 and flashed ) there is a difference.

my 14SGS has 135_OFF and 15RGS has 02_OFF.... same directions for both were given to the tech and they came out different. I know Digital Tech was updated on 15 JULY with new software, which changed the procedures for flashing the HU's.... this may be the culprit for me. What I have noticed is that my 15RGS is much more dynamic with a lot more base response... but not as loud as my 14SGS with the same system. SO.... since I like to tinker, I swapped HU's from the 14SGS to the 15RGS to see if indeed it was just the design differences between the batwing front pods vs. the shark pods in the faring... NOPE! The flashes are definitely different in regards to the EQ curve defined by the flashes. My RGS sounds just like my SGS with the SGS HU installed.

The goal of the flash for ANY aftermarket amp/system that doesn't have it's own way of dealing with HD's built-in DSP, is to get the flattest EQ curve on the output that is possible. view the pic below for BEFORE AND AFTER

EQ-curve.jpg

So... following some other info in resetting the calibration files on the HU, I decided to try it on my RGS with the original HU back in and see what happened.... well.... something happened.. not sure what.. but now I have to turn my bass/treble all the way to the 2-3 bars from the bottom negative side of the scale and volume can now go to 5 bars before the max before distortion kicks in, where as before I rest the CAL, I was at 3-4 bars ABOVE the middle and max volume was at 2 bars below max before distortion... but it sounds a lot better... wEirD!!!

I checked my configuration file after the reset and still at 02_OFF, but controlling the output is way different now. I asked my HD tech ( who flashed both my bikes ) if the reset would change anything and he said NO.... but he can tell it did.... So he is hunting for answers as well.

I am gonna be laid up for a while recovering from knee surgery tomorrow and won't have time and/or ability to follow up on this fir some time, but be assured, I will.

I wanna go back in and reset factory defaults and reset the flash procedures again... we will see what happens when I am standing over his shoulder...

Thanks for sharing this. I think my before flash sound is better than my after flash sound but it is good enough to live with now. I with they could just have a FLAT Flash where they don't mess with the output levels!!!

Thanks for the reply, I lost my bass and treble adjustments with the flash, still there but they have no effect.
Good luck with that knee!

If you flash radio firmware and you have setting problems doing a reset should resolve them.

Spazz think the DT update did change things cause I also was 135 and reflashed and now on 02 with a working fader that didn't before

Exactly.... and you have better bass but distorts at a lot less volume correct?

And as for a reset... seems to have made difference for the worst in my case. I have yet to meess with it... I'm sitting in the hospital awaiting surgery.... can you see where my priorities are right now??! LoL!!!

Tried everything, even loading previous software and reloading current software, still no bass and treble control that works. Many have reported this problem in the other forums.
Guess that is a result of the "flat" EQ everyone wants from the flash.

No... the flat EQ curve is what you want from the flash from DT... not the update via USB...

I take it you tried to reset calibration by holding mute thru the boot and accept screen and reset cal?

Reset Cal does a full factory reset and boot of the head unit. What bin file do you have running? There are a few that certain options just don't work. Have you ever had HD flash with DT? What was flashed? Basically if reset call doesn't work we need more info.

had it flashed by DT for 2 amp on/4 speaker configuratuon as per Soundz instructions that Peter gave me. Reset cal didn't reset to factory... still have 02-OFF but the gains went thru the roof and distorts way early. Bass/treble bars are now 2 from bottom and distorts at 60% volume.

Like I said... I'm in recovery laid up strapped to a machine for a while... so I can't play with it at all

Was more of a question for berrygreen but yeah I did the same my distortion is not as bad but could be that I connected the rears with another connector Peter sent me and set the amp to 4 ch so I can fade. Do you have a working fader with 02? Mine does. Headed to Biketoberfest and going to look Peter up when I'm there to see what his opinion is.

Gotchay...and yes... I have a working fader with 02 and I have serious though about hookin the rears separate with another set of connectors from Peter. My concern is doing that will deem a re-tune by Peter on the oscilloscope to get it dialed in correctly.

Seems the HDF thread on this issue that is quite long is stating the same issues with 02.

I had the stock Flash, had the dealer flash per Biketronics recommendations, wound up with 128 OFF bin.
Lost ability to control bass and treble, it is there and moves but no change in sound...thats why I said flat EQ.
As far as the reset...did nothing, I was just simply stating I tried going back and forth with the software just to see. I even tried the reset via diag menu with the bike running, that is how I found that I have 128 ON with the engine running and 128 OFF with the engine off.

The setup I have is the Biketronics amp/speaker and speaker brackets for the 14 and up model.
128 OFF and 128 ON which gives the flat EQ and no Bass and Treble adjustment and the software is the 1.19....

Big question for ya.... did you flash via DT BEFORE 19.1 release, then update the firmware?

Or..

update to 19.1 and flash AFTER 15 JULY 2015?

Reason I ask.. 19.1 update had major affect (for some reason that I can't answer) with flashes done prior to 15 July 2015 via DT at the dealer. DT had a major update on this date and flash procedures changed with it.

I found this out from other resources and updated to 19.1 prior to my flash via DT on 15 Aug 2015. It was important update to to 19.1 BEFORE the flash with DT.

I can't find any EXACT details on what happens but something does happen and jot for the better...

Yes, had the latest software 1.19.1, and the dealer flashed the bike Sept 18th
had it flashed like this which gave me the 128 OFF

Under the Speakers tab:
Two Speaker setup -
1. Choose one amp in the “select number of amps” dropdown box.
2. Check the box for “2 speakers - Upper Fairing”.

I have read many post on other forums that flashing the bike causes loss of fader and eq control

Just received this from Bill at Biketronics :

There is some misinformation out there about being able to turn off the internal amp in the radio, that does not actually ever happen, you are just changing the EQ settings when you get the radio flashed. Getting it flashed loads different EQ files that "flatten" out the sound and remove the really high bass/treble boost that HD uses when there is no amp installed.

The off/on bin files exist because HD uses one EQ setup when the bike is off and loads a different one when it is running. Unfortunately the one that gets loaded when running does not sound as good, it is kinda weak. HD did this so the their audio equipment would sound good in the showroom but would not blow up when really cranked up on the road.
