12 Volt Accessory Power Outlet Lighter Socket

I use the onboard usb port for my thumb drive that contains my music. I use the 12v port with a very short cell charger & I charge my cell that sits inside the usb compartment. The charger cord gets pinched upon closing the door but I used a dremel & notched the lip of the door lid & that solved that perfectly.

So in my case I just mounted my cell phone on the handlebars and routed the wire down the handlebars (plan to eventually run it inside the bar) to the USB plug in the front compartment. This keep my phone charged, allows me to play my music (iTunes or Pandora) from the phone while it stays charged via the interface cord and even allows me to have a decent GPS (Garmin USA App on phone) which now includes traffic and weather........not sure I will have a need for the 12V port on my bike but then again, you never know :D

Hi Paul65k, thanks for your comments. A couple of questions... Why wouldn't you just use the Boom GPS? Is the Garmin better? Sounds like the weather and traffic items are useful features. Also wouldn't it be easier to plug your phone into the 12 v power outlet? Do you plug it into the USB connector in order to integrate it into the bikes controls? Just curious. Thanks!

I plan to use mine to keep my Go Pro charged while riding. That things goes through batteries pretty quick.

I have one of those lithium packs that charges from the wall or from a 12v socket. I will use the bike's 12v socket to charge this when camping

Out of curiosity, what do people use this for on their SG/SGS?

I'm going to use mine for the gopro as I currently use the USB for thumb drive for music. Phone is normally bluetooth.

Paul,

What mount is that? Is it an iPhone 6 or 6+ you have in the mount? I've been looking for a good one for my 6+ as depending on the case I have on it, if it'll fit in the compartment.

Thanks.

I certainly could use the 12V to power the phone and then connect via BT but I think the way I have it wired is much cleaner and the music quality is always better via direct connect as opposed to BT.......you also have more control over the phone functions playing music when connected directly such as choosing playlists with the bike controls, etc..

As far as using the Garmin vs. the Boom GPS the difference IMHO is like the difference between 1999 cell phones and a new smartphone :D.......Try to change a destination while on the fly with the Boom system, try to map out your route for tomorrow at the table with friends while you are out to dinner, try to look up the price of gas at all stations in the next town with your Boom system not to mention the traffic and weather.......all in all the Boom GPS is a disgrace to technology and as I've said many times the team that brought this "Innovation" to us should be fired publicly (twice if possible)......but then again I spent my career in High Tech and I do know for a fact that the only reason we got such a POS GPS solution was that it was easy for them to implement via slightly modifying an off the shelf system from Harmon international that sucks in a car and is even worse on a bike.........sorry rant over

I use this system http://www.proclipusa.com/phone-hol...-attachment-514663-19736.cmsv?p_leftorright=0

You need to find a mounting solution as well........I used theone that goes around the handlebars on this trip and I think it is just a bit flimsy so I'll be ordering this one: http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/road-tech-zumo-660---665-handlebar-mount-kit

I think it will certainly look more finished but it will be more substantial as well !!

After my epic 2,800 mile journey last week, I have to agree with Paul65k. The Boom GPS is a piece of crap....I did get pretty handy at doing stuff with it but there was a steep learning curve. Like Paul said, try putting a destination in it....I tried while going down US 395 and putting in a city (Lee Vining) that happened to be a turn point to another highway and it said that city didn't exist. When I got closer, I searched for gas stations and it found them at Lee Vining....wtf? I tried thr Harley Trip Planner and that was almost a joke. I just want Google maps on my next GPS.

One thing I remind myself...this is Harley's first GPS and as with all new technologies, they have some tweaking to do. Apple's map apps was another one that flubbed on the first try. I still like the GPS because it does have some handy features that once you learn how to do it, like display the elevation, is very cool. And I don't have to worry about bringing along an extra gadget with cords, plugs, instructions, etc. Overall, I give the Boom GPS 3 stars...out of 20.

the phone would either be hidden away, or the compartment door would have to stay open if I plugged the phone into the USB port.
Not necessarily true....you can run the plug to the compartment and close it (as I do by adding a small groove with either a file or a Dremel tool.....alternately you can run the cable into the fairing (through the handlebars if you get real creative) and make a very small entry into the compartment, use a grommet around the cord to make it look professional....in any case you can very creatively find a way to get the cord into the compartment and still close the door with just a little work. :D
