In an effort to keep perfect service records and save money over having my local dealership service my bike (they want $500 for the 1k service), I created a log for the 2016 Street Glide services 1k through 20k, complete with checklist of services to perform and the torque values for any service item requiring the torque of something be checked.

I'm attaching it to this post in case anyone else might find it useful.

I have heard multiple times from dealerships and people that ride harleys, that the 1K miles service must be done by the dealership, to keep the warranty valid.
So are these people wrong? I know after that its ok to diy after the 1K.

I have heard that too about the 1k service, but don't think that is legal. But I did take my bike in last week for the 1 k. $310.

I do ALL my fluid changes myself. It's easy and its enjoyable and I know it's done right! I did take mine in for the 10k and made sure they covered every item on the list. 2.5 years with this bike and never had a single problem (17k miles)!

It is in fact illegal for a vehicle manufacture to deny warranty claims because you've (competently) completed your own vehicle service, or had it serviced by a qualified independent technician rather than the dealership. They will certainly try to though, and this is why it's important to save receipts from materials (oils/filters/etc) purchased, and keep complete detailed records of service performed. This is the exact reason I made this log, to keep along with my receipts as a detailed account of the thorough service I am completing myself.

I had a friend come over and watch me do the 1k mile service on my bike (and give me a hand here and there), and it took about 2.5 hours and 4 beers. We both agreed there is no way the dealership (which in our neck of the woods charges $500 for this service) would do all the items on the checklist, but since I did it myself I know every bolt/screw is properly torqued, and only the finest fluids were used. This was my first major service on a motorcycle I've done myself (I've previously only done simple/standard oil changes), and it felt great to complete it myself, and after a short test ride my bike to seems to be pretty happy too!

Note, while doing the service, I caught a few items I put in the log I made that don't apply to the FLHX/FLHXS, so I removed those items, and also added the torque specs for the drain plugs and derby cover screws (for reference). I've updated the link in the original post...

Sal- it only takes two hours with NO Beers, but I'll bet you had more fun!

Sal, you willing to email that checklist? Can't view it...

Since this was my first bike I decided to buy the service plan which covered everything up to and including the 10K service. I don't want to debate whether that was a wise choice but have a question moving forward since I plan on doing the future service myself. Is there any concern changing to different brands of fluids after the dealer used their fluids for the first 10k? Also is there any concerns going from standard fluid to synthetic?

Thanks!

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this check list and post it for others like myself. I had my 1000 mile service done at the dealer and since have done my 5000 mile service myself.
I'm in Corona if you get out this way for a ride I'll buy you a cold one for your effort.

120 euros for my 1000 miles service. Brought my oil and filter. 500 dollars will make me drive a BMW for sure.

2014 Switchback
2014 SGS

I just recently took my 08 in for its 20k service. Since I'm new to Harleys I figured I'd pay $409 to have the service done, cause it sounded like it had a fouled out plug/firing on one cyclinder. Well the firing on on cyclinder was the case. Now with them doing plugs on this service also, when they pulled the front cyclinder plug it was saturated with oil. Called me the next day to tell me it would cost $600 on top of my service plus parts to repair this issue. Have anyone else have this happen, and is this a common problem that the seals go bad for sitting for a few months?
