I see there is room in the backing plate not behind the filter. I was thinking of changing to a K&N filter then drilling some holes in the backing plate to get some more flow in there. Anyone do this yet?

Welcome Jones.
Go to www.fuelmotousa.com
They have done this for you in a nice kit that includes backing plate and filter. The Rushmore cover seals against the CNC backing plate and looks stock but flows almost 50% more and is quiet in that you don't hear the sucking sound from the throttle body like the stage I SE. It also supports the very heavy Rushmore cover. I run this on my 2014 SG. You will have to get the ECM flashed!
You will notice a gain in HP & Tq

Welcome from Reno, NV....

Your best bet is to drop $150 on the Stage I upgrade and do it right.... it will allow you to keep your stock cover and opens the backing plate up for 360 degree air flow....

Welcome. Great info here. How about an intro of yourself? A little info on your ride, basic stuff.

I seen the fuel moto set up. Seems like I can accomplish the same thing for free instead of $150. I did a bit of research and found the Rushmore covers alone and stock are about 25% better flowing than previous factory air cleaners. Think I might be doing what Fuel moto has but with the stock. After I settle on exhaust choice first.

I just added myself to the new guy thread with some info BTW

thanks... it will help us help you later on....

The stock filter is what's restricting airflow. I'm sure you could drill holes in it and shed run like a raped ape.

I would have to agree with Spazz...buy the stage one kit and a tuner. If you drill holes in the back of your stock one you will increase air flow but probably not that much. Either way, more air means you are going to need more fuel...
