I split lanes anytime I need too. Believe it or not an independent study done shows it is safer for bikes to split lanes then to sit behind a car stopped and get rear ended.

I think as Men we can justify anything brother, just be safe out there, and don't be too trusting of the cagers. Our shield needs to be invisible.

I rarely lane split. Usually I will take the median. Most cagers are not paying attention to their surroundings

Your route takes you to ABQ, but the area to ride is closer to santa fe, or Los Alamos. The Jemez area is motorcycle heaven. The show longhorn is filmed up here and every weekend the road is filled with bikes from all over the US. LA is about 1.5 hours from ABQ so it isnt that far off your path.

What exactly is Jemez? Sounds interesting

Jemez Mountains and a little spot in the road called Jemez Springs. We rode down there last fall. Great scenery and a nice little bar and grill called Los Ojo's. Get the burger on a tortilla. Someone else on here told us about it and I had to check it out myself. The hot springs are pretty nice, too. Depending on your route it will take you through part of the Los Alamos atomic lab area,

To the side topic: I lane split on my glide all the time here in Southern California, so its certainly not too large to split with, and as anyone I ride with can attest - I lane split with this beast of a bike like a boss (if I want to I can easily keep up with crotch rockets splitting at 70+ mph, I just don't have a death wish). That said, some of my friends with apes have a harder time keeping up with me as the taller/wider bars and corresponding relocated mirrors have a harder time of clearing truck mirrors. Sure you see tons of lane splitting accidents on YouTube. You also see tons of regular motorcycle accidents on YouTube, but you don't let that dissuade you from riding at all do you? As long as you have your high beams on, your pipes are loud, you're uber attentive, and being safe (not trying to split lanes at 50+ mph, and keeping it ~15 mph above the flow of traffic), you should be fine. Just stay OFF the 5 fwy in the OC/LA area. Take freeways that instead have carpool lanes (like the 91/405/105/610/710) which are wider and you can generally more safely split on the yellow carpool line since you'll have more space and slightly less fear someone is going to merge into you. I mean if you are driving through CA and don't live here, you might as well give it a try just to experience it, since it's the only place in the US that this practice is legal! (Although its legal in most of the rest of the world!)

Back on topic: With that many miles (nearly 10k) - will you be stopping somewhere midway for an oil change?

When you get to Minneapolis, hit the Mississippi river roads and follow it south all the way to Wabasha, MN then cross into Wisconsin @ Nelson, WI and head east from there. after Red wing, MN is where the road gets really good going south.
Beautiful road, and very very popular with bikes. Its a must ride road for the state.

Check out the route on google maps, to know the best route down. (sorry not good with road numbers)

I think MN has more miles right next to the river than sconi does, but you MUST stop @ nelson cheese in nelson, wi. Great Ice cream, great sandwiches, great cheese, its an all around great stop. It is filled with bikes in the summer months.

The great river road is a blast!

The ride from Minneapolis to WI Dells is boring as hell! Nothing but pine trees and troopers.

If your going to stop in the Madison area hit me up.

Thanks guys.. I appreciate all the input.. Blast off day is June 19th.. I am super excited.. Me and my scoot have been in the Gym all winter preparing for battle.. It's going to be a heavyweight 12 round brawl(I have issues.. Lol) but it should be fun. People say why are you doing it???most of them never rode. I'm sure most of you can understand

In Utah you should look at extending your ride to go into and through Zion NP (worth the ride) out the back you can take Utah Hwy 89 toward the 70 and then back to the 15. Better scenery than the 15 but longer.

If it were me I would also hit up some of those canyon roads right outside of SLC, Utah. Emigration canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, East canyon are all killer roads with twisters and big elevation changes, also wont take too much of your time.
