I have a new derby cover and want to put it on now instead of waiting until I change the fluids. Is there a safe way to do that without loosing fluid?

You should be fine. Stand the bike upright if you can. The fluid level shouldn't be enough to pour out.

Generally speaking, unless your Primary is overfilled with oil, you can take the Derby Cover off and no oil will spill out. I do a lot of oil changes on my bike and have never had an issue.

Make sure it's standing up straight when you do it. If it's on the kick stand it will leak if properly filled. if you have a jack or lift that's the easiest way to change it and make sure you have the right gasket.
