Hey guys someone help me out pls. Wondering how important it is to use the fork oil level tool . Did lower legs on 2014 sg and service manual tells me put just over 24oz and then use tool . So is it undoable unless tool is in hand ? I know someone has to know

The tool just sets the oil level at a specified distance from the top of the fork tube. Make your own dip stick and suck out any excess oil with a piece of clear tubing.

Thank you ! Sounds easy enough I appreciate the quick response and help

Well, not to hi-jack anything, but, I would like to add Progressive springs to my forks this winter. Any tricks or things to definitely pay attention to? I'm pretty good with a wrench, just haven't messed with these yet. Did a few fork jobs on a buddies Gold Wing 20 some years ago. TIA, Mike

I would consider the Premium Ride Double Cartridge Fork Kit-45500106 from H-D for 2013 models. The 2014 kit for the new forks works great for me and the springs are progressive wound.

Thanks Hulkss. All ready have the springs. Looked at the HD kit, but that's a lot of jack after what I spent this year. These springs may not be top of the line, but, at the very least should help with dive. Just wondering if there is anything critical to watch for when doing a spring swap. I have the shop manual and am looking for input from those who have done this before.

Just did mine a month ago. Your going to need a 19mm allen for the top cap and 12mm allen for the bottom. I made the mistake of using the screaming eagle heavy fork oil. Rides way to rough. Going to try the HD type B fork oil next.

Do I need to pull the bottom out if I'm just swapping springs and top spacers?

I used the Progressive kit 10-1568 and you have to take the bottom bolts out to put the top out springs in.

So on hulkss advice I made a dip stick from an old oil dipstick I had around . Measured it with caliper and put a bend in it to hold it in the fork. now if it is overfilled I look at how far up it comes and take out the excess with a turkey baster
Oh just an FYI 3.74 inches from top of fork if anyone cant find the measurement in manual

I used the hd type e . I was going to do ATF f type but while looking around on the web I saw progressive recommended not using it. The weight is close or the same but the properties of the oil are diff according to them

OK, getting closer to putting my Progressive front springs in. Now, I have a '13 SG. Can I just pull the tubes off, dump the oil, swap springs, refill with fresh oil and reinstall on the bike with the right length spacer? Or do I have to disassemble the fork? Not interested in other products. I all ready have these springs. Thanks.

Wish I would have received some help here. Guys another forum stepped up.

The fellas that usually have the answers have been online along with a pile of other guys who do their own work. Was just looking for a nudge in the right direction. Until I do this myself I won't know for sure, but, I have been told the fork does not need to be disassembled. Just removed. Treat it similar to an oil change. That is what I will do with the stock "E" type oil. No sense going thicker when I don't know for sure how much the springs will change things. Thanks for the reply though, Bagger. I appreciate the interest.

Well I also do a lot of my own work my riding partner is a Harley tech. And I have changed the oil in the forks many times just never done the progressive spring change. Wouldn't want to give you any bad advise. But I could find out if you still have questions. But now I am thinking I need to do a spring job lol. Have done everything else on the upper end and into the primary. Breaking cases open this winter on another bagger.
