I spent 25 years in outsourced/offshore manufacturing and can tell you for a fact that our smaller competitors were notorious for knocking off popular products.......OEM's like Harley (or Apple, Dell, etc...) are very conscious of this and as a result only work with the largest companies to keep this under control. Unfortunately a company like JW speaker doesn't have the volume to do this and as a result will work with smaller companies and the by-product of this is that eventually there will be a mysterious "3rd shift" pumping out clones when the JW rep is back in the states.......I've seen it too many times for it to be funny.Probably worded that wrong....they probably don't have chineses factories knocking out accessories for 1/4 of their retail price...unless the factory making them is knocking them off, which is pretty common. Even for HD it would be nearly impossible to shut them down.
That's the risk you take when you send your manufacturing offshore. If your product is popular, they will knock it off and before you know it, it's all over eBay for less than your cost.
In the case of this headlight, isn't the Daymaker made by JW Speaker? They probably outsource manufacturing as well, but that's beside the point. The 8700 E2 is all over Amazon for $260 give or take. The 8700 probably fits a lot of vehicles as well as HD. HD takes the same light, puts it in a HD box and doubles the price.
This is especially true when the product is "Universal" as are the 7" round(s) headlight installation which uses a standard interface.......even if you do need a special cable to combine the Hi-Lo back to the standard interface........all in all there will still be enough people out there who will always drink the HD "Kool-aid" and buy the branded product for 2-3X the price......nothing new here.........kind of like buying a "Harley" 1157 turn signal bulb for 3-4X what the same bulb costs at Autozone
