Do any of you guys notice your bike using oil in between changes?? I've got a 07 with a big bore kit (103) S&S compression release cams and head work.. I'm going through about a quart in 3500/3700 miles.. It's not leaking and not coming out of the breather.. I keep it halfway up the stick.. I keep it topped off.. I'm using 20/50 Mobil 1.. Thanks

That seems normal to me, however, my 2014 motor only uses about 1/2 inch of oil on the dipstick in 5000 miles. I never have to add any oil. I fill it to the full line using the procedure in the owners manual where you let the bike idle while on the side stand with hot oil. Using AMSOIL.

Ok, more input.

My worst brand new Harley burned 1 quart of oil every 500 miles. Never had to change oil, it just burned through it all. Always kept cans of 60wt in a saddlebag.

Many events of oil usage are a result of insuffent piston ring sealing as a result of mismatched, inferior, or out of tolerance components. Improper break in procedures can promote oil by pass also.

BFC01- I change my own fluids, my engine is non-modified. I fill the crankcase at 3.5 qts and I've not had any Harley I've owned ever burn oil.

I did hop up the engine in my Corvette one time and after that, it started using oil.

You got that right. When I finally took it apart it had 883cc piston rings installed on 1000cc pistons (1972 XLCH). Way too much end gap for sure.

Just talked with a friend I ride with a lot..I asked him if he'd ever seen my bike smoke.. He said he noticed it smoke out of the left side on take off.. He said the smoke is a lighter color smoke.

I drove over the road for 20 plus years I was always in a new 379 Peterbilt with 550 horse caterpillar and 1 600horse cat anyway the advice I was always gave from mechanics was drive it like you stole it or like your going to always drive it ,we would run them to 300 thousand miles trade in never had any problems .Now my new Harley 2015 SGS ,guys @ dealership told me 55to 65 for first 1000 miles ,I have never been easy on anything not about to start here ,I am glad I found this forum thanx guys your a wealth of info

I did not follow break in guide lines. I now have 14,000 on it and have never had any issues with engine, transmission or oil consumption.

I had mine on the dyno before I ever brought it home then I rode it like I stole it! It doesn't use any oil and runs like a champ, 5600 miles now.

Crumb- what are your Dyno numbers?

Never even check the oil. Dealer does all the service and I always tell them to document and let me know if there are any issues with how it comes into the shop. I did the oem break in and have 21k on the bike and still don't check the oil. It doesn't smoke or leak. Run it.
