Rear ended

Got rear ended tonight. Was coming off the freeway and while slowing down for the off ramp, the car behind me didn't stop in time. I didn't have time once I heard the brakes squealing to escape, and instead got hit and went for a while before the bike finally went over. It must have hit the right side first as that saddlebag is in a thousand pieces but then flipped to the left side, hitting my ankle pretty good.

Driver was some little teenage girl. Had a witness behind her. Well see what insurance says but I really hope she ain't totalled. My only real concern is that the impact could have tweaked the swingarm. Everything else is just a part, and the bike is new enough to still be worth repairing.

So begins to annoying period of insurance and waiting. I'm mostly fine with the worst part being my back is super stiff. I guess my new intake will remain in the box until this is settled.

Sorry to hear that man. Hope your back and ankle feel better.

Bikes can be fixed.

Glad your ok though.

Glad you weren't hurt bad, that's my biggest fear riding on the freeways. People with their phones, never pay attention to anyone around them.

Be sure to remove your Love Jugs, once insurance company decide to totaled your bike they won't let you take anything off the bike.....that's with a lot of the insurance companies out there.

Well the good/bad is it may not be a total loss. To me it all comes down to that swingarm and frame. Bike is a 2014 with 40k miles, so it should be worth repairing the body damage. I also have all my receipts so everything added to her can be added to the total.

My ankle is mostly just bruised, it just got hit as the bike turned over. I may take a day or 2 off work to recoup.

BTW helmet was untouched. I was so frustrated I almost threw it at the car though. Pisses me off that idiot kids can be allowed to endanger lives and drive away like nothing happened. (I'm sure she was cited but that's a slap on the wrist for negligence with a 1 ton weapon)

Fore sure.....I don't know about other areas but in AZ we have some extremely dump drivers. Not a day gone by without someone on the road making mistake that can put me in a bind. Even with my loud exhaust they can't hear/see me for whatever reason. Some pissed me off so bad I wait for traffic light so I can get off my bike and have a little chat. Lucky for them that never happen or they turn off somewhere.

I think having a loud exhaust, brighter headlight/taillight's definitely help but still they can be on the phone or painting their face can really distract them and we have to watch everyone out there.......I tell everyone that thinking about getting a bike and ride this "you are a soldier in the field and everyone is out to get you!" and to never ride when you are in a hurry. When I am on the road I don't trust anyone, I watch every move of every vehicles around me and when I get home I feel so tired.....LOL!

Everyone, ride safe out there, be very careful, give yourself enough room between cars (front/back). Let people pass you, trust me you want them in front of you and not behind you so you can your eyes on them.

Wow sorry to hear this happened and happy to hear you will recover. The bike can be replaced hoping you collected all the driver information and copies of the witness statements for your insurance as this may help you down the road.

Glad to see your OK Im tired of these little **** bag teenagers on there frigin cell phones.

Well of course the claims guys don't work on weekends. Waiting and more waiting. Back sure hurts but only if I move. Just don't move and life is good.

Still holding out hope it won't be a total. Im so close to paying it off!

Soft tissue damage is no joke. It seemed in your first post that you were not hurt bad, but those types of injurys take time to show up. That’s why it’s never a good idea to tell the insurance company that you’re ok. When they first talk to you they are friendly as hell, but after they’ve had a few conversations with you and have extracted all the data they need to make their case, then they will start nickle and diming the hell out of you. Make sure they hear you say that you have a back injury, and don’t describe it, just say it hurts, then go see your doctor. I’d hate to hear later that you got screwed by those sharks.

He is definitely correct about this, I have heard way too many stories how people got screwed so bad. Back/neck injury show up a bit later but insurance companies knowingly they will corner you to tell them you are ok then that's pretty much it. I am not saying you can't claim it later but you have to go through quite a bit to get your claim later.

This is very true.

My mom got t-boned 2 years ago and she is still fighting the other guys insurance over something torn in her shoulder, which has had 2 repair surgerys. Make sure you get checked out man

I think riding a motorcycle in today’s times is 4 Times more dangerous than 5 years ago. These smart phones are killers, I’ve noticed

Well I don't know if the girl was on her phone or what, not that she would be smart to admit that anyway. She wouldn't even look at me. A smart ass pissed off biker throwing parts of his vehicle onto the shoulder probably isn't someone she usually communicates with.

I don't and didn't volunteer information to insurance companies. I keep information limited to the facts that I know without saying more than I need. I would rather tell the cop "Yea I was picking my nose and I think she was jamming out to the new beiber album" than I would insurance, because cops aren't trying to find a reason to pay me less money.

I just hope I get an answer on the bike soon. I know there's a lot of parts to consider before they can make that call, especially checking the drivetrain. All the painted parts ain't cheap either. Nor will they be as quickly available.

PS I still get really pissed off at the "you laid it down" thing. That implies that I intentionally crashed my vehicle. You didn't roll your jeep after you got T-bone did you? No, the laws of physics did that for you.

My worst fear. I hate to hear it happened. Looks like you were well lit from behind. No excuses on her part. Take care of yourself and don't let them try to pull a fast one!!

Chin up brother. Heal well and ride again..a frustrating preiod but at least you are still here. Look forward to seeing the reincarnation of the bike or your new one however it plays out.

Quick update, the other insurance is still 'sorting things out' so my insurance is taking the bike to get it assessed. Tick tock, clarise! If she ends up being a total I'll probably take a few months and save up the dough (via the money I had been spending on bike payments) to buy my next one paid in full. Of course this is all assuming they can't/won't repair my poor girl!

Unfortunately my back up vehicle, the '86 k25 Sierra 'tank' got a flat. And my spare was so old the sidewall burst a mile down the road. I rented a car while I got her repaired and really enjoyed having a car for a day! Mind you I've only driven a car twice before in my life. My dad was a truck guy. I don't think I'm gonna be buying a car, it's just too limited when it comes to hauling big stuff. I'll buy another truck before I buy a car.

Lets all hope for a "Total", there's a 2018 out there with your name on it!!!

I'm actually hoping for the opposite! Keep this one for a few years, run her to the ground then buy whatever the next thing is that comes out.

Well I finally got the answer, the bike is totalled. Let's just say I have a pretty nice down payment available. Still sucks to me, I had that bike set up just the way i wanted! I'm going to sit on it while I decide my next move, but my current idea is to find a used 2017. I might just save a bit more first. The Dave ramsay on my shoulder says a 100% down payment would have the best interest rate.
