To much or to little?

16 SGS, Just did me 5000 mile three hole oil change. Took the bike on a 250 mile ride. On the way home the bike seems to be shifting harder than before. I try to shift as easy as I can to try to avoid stripping the splines.

Have read so many threads on what oils to use and how much to put in each hole that my head hurts. In my case I have settled on Klotz products.

I'm thinking that I may have put to much or to little in the primary.

Advise?

What fill level did you use for the primary?
I think these bikes are sensitive to the type of oil in the primary too.

I run klotz too and never had a issue . I switched to type f transmission in the primary for a little more bite . did you use the primary fluid and the transmission oil?

I use AMSOIL for all my fluids on the bike. The engine oil should be 4 qts including the filter, the transmission and primary drives each require 1 qt of fluid. AMSOIL makes specific fluids for the engine, transmission and primary drive. I switch over to their fluids at my 1k change and have not have a single issue yet.

If you overfilled the primary it will definitely cause issues with the clutch being able to disengage and reengage properly.

Thanks for the replies. Klotz makes products for each hole and thats what was used. I followed the owners man. for replacement amounts. Will inspect this weekend to see if the primary is overfull.

I see the manual calls for changing the primary every 10K and the tranny 20K...do most change it earlier? Is it really necessary?

You will get many opinions on this issue but I think most will agree that 10k is too many miles on primary and certainly 20k is too many miles on tranny fluid. That said I change engine oil 3k-4K and do all three holes every other time I change engine oil

My Engine oil gets changed every 3-5 thou and my primary and tranny every other oil change.

I change all three every 5k miles....I use Mobile 1 in the engine/tranny and 90 wt synthetic in the primary...no problems.

I have been using Mobil 1 20w 50 in the primary and tranny for years. Shifts smooth with little or no "klunk", no problem with the clutch

I run my bikes very hard only getting around 5000 miles on a rear tire and blowing up a few motors in the past. Now I change motor oil (Amsoil) every 2500 miles.

I've been using Amsoil and now use their primary and transmission specif products as well. Like most guys I change the oil every 3000, and the Trans and Primary every other change.

OP - I'm no expert but the Primary is pretty level sensitive - how much did you put in?

There's a guy online with a "Ride it Wrench it" website that offers pretty good video tutorials on how to do basic services on our bikes. I found them helpful.

That's what I do also, I run the Harley synthetic and have them change everything every 5k with the service.
I know it's a little more expensive but I bought the 7 yr warranty and don't want any issues if something happens. That way it's all documented and in their system so no worries. lol

hate to admit when I screw up but my mistake was that I refilled the primary the bike was on the kick stand. Color my face red!

What difference is that supposed to make??

If you haven't got a workshop manual get one now if you are wrenching on your bike!

Refil your primary with the correct amount of oil that is stated in your manual (already someone said its 38oz which sounds spot on), problem solved..

Mistakes can happen, even when following the owners manual as you stated earlier. You're learning how to service your bike and save some money. However you'll want to order HD's Service Manual to get in depth direction and torque guidelines. If working alone, it ain't easy to level your bike upright. I use a small 2x4 but I consider it dangerous. Hope to purchase a "Condor Pit Stop Model Motorcycle Wheel Stop Chock PS-1500 Aluminum" in the future.

Did you resolve your rough shifting?

I change my motor & Primary every 3 -3500 , run a good gear oil in the trans at 10K intervals , nothing but gears in there so little if any contamination or breakdown, what I drain at 10K always looks almost new.
