To tune or not?

I just got a 2017 SGS and immediately put Rinehart 4.5's on it. Now I'm adding a Big Sucker air filter. The old school thinking was no tune was needed for just slip-ons, but if you added an air filter you should tune it. Does this still hold true on the M8? Do I need a tune or can I get away without it and not have any issues? These are NOT True Duals; just the slip ons and air cleaner.

I think you can get away without. But do you want to leave untapped torque and horse power on the table? Your stock ECM will accommodate, but why add bolt on power improvements and not tune them.

I will probably decide on a tuner down the road, I'm just tapped out at the moment. How much HP are we really talking about by adding a tuner? Which one is tried and proven on the M8?

IMHO, I think once decide on what the end state of performance is can help you with that decision. If you see new cams and valves and so on down the road you may want to consider a TTS type of tuner (fully tunable as well as auto tune) or a VH FP3 type (canned map) with auto tune. If your are satisfied with intake and exhaust and your done, I think the lesser expensive but fully capable FP3 will work. There is no shortage of info on this site to become knowledgeable of tuners and decide what best works for you and the budget.

Harley is stating that it is a requirement to tune if you change SlipOns and Intake. I have a couple friends who didn't and the bike threw a check engine light. One was near immediate the other was a few days I believe.

I just put CFR SlipOns and a HO Intake and went with a FP3. The supposed gain from this is near 10HP. Not sure if true but as others have stated why leave untapped power.

In any case just sharing info based on a couple friends bikes in the recent weeks.

The way I read it is the motors comes leaned out from the factory the slipons have very little impact on that but the less restrictive air filter is going to lean it out even more the motor will run warmer. This applied to the 103 not sure about the M8 but it stands to reason still likely to be the same. Not wanting a turner I head the dealership do it.

Everyone is tuner happy. I have Freeflow mufflers (SE Street Cannons) and a Fuel Moto high flow air cleaner. I had my dealership do a stage one ECM flash for $150 (cheaper than a tuner and less hassle) and my bike runs like a clock and seems to run cooler as well. Of course I know that I have no future mods planned that is why I went this route. All done by HD with no warranty issues. Basically a set it and forget it proposition.

I agree. H-D factory tuning runs great when your engine hardware closely matches one of their tunes. They are not too lean or low on power.

I was planning on getting a tune from the shop rather than a tuner after getting my Stage 1.
This spring I added a set of Cobra slip-ons and it ran fine.
Then I did an Arlen Ness Big-Sucker kit and figure now I'd need the tune.
Nope- still runs great.
Hard throttle, hard decel, warm engine or cold, it never pops ,farts or stutters.
I think I'll leave the tune till I do cams when I'll need to tune it anyway...

Cobra 909's, SE air cleaner and FP3. I'm happy, so is the M8!
