Tour-pak suggestions

Ok so I'm trashing on what size tour pak. King or chopped. I'm thinking King because the extra space would be nice to have although the chopped is sleeker looking.
I'm only a solo rider and will be using a solo position rack. I definitely don't want the king backrest if I go with the king-pak, don't think that would work or look right at all.
Not sure if even the chopped rest would work well in the solo position. I have a back rest on my Mustang seat so I'm not sure if I even need a back rest for the pak
From what I understand is they both come drilled for their back rests and the mounting holes for the 2 rests are different. Not sure if I can plug the holes with some plastic inserts or something and not mount a back rest at all. Is anybody running a king-pak with a chopped back rest on it. That would seem the most practical for a solo rider.
Thanks in advance for any input.

If your investing in a tour pack the only reason to get the chopped one is for looks but IMHO if your putting a tour pack on its for the reason of actually hauling things. Lots of room in the king plus it will hold a helmet. I'm prone to vote for the king from the practicality standpoint plus I like the looks of them better. I cannot speak to the back rest issue.

If you're going to add a tour pak for those long-ride adventures, you're going to want the extra space that the king tour pak provides. If you think you'll leave it on as a normal fixture, I'd probably lean toward the chopped pack because of the looks, as you mentioned.
However, the back rest is an issue. I would think you could plug it- even with some automotive screw plugs from a parts/hardware store (lowes has them). Given your grey/black scheme, you could probably work something out that looks ok without too much expense.

I have the King tour pack ONLY for extended trips like the one I left on yesterday (3 weeks with the wife) and it's not really big enough as we (mostly the wife) feels the need for a bag on top of the tour pack (Decker from T-Bags) as you can see in the attached picture.

PS....If you're old enough you may remember the "Beverly Hillbillies" I sometimes feel like ol' Jed driving into town :D

Blues and Mandrew,
Yeah I was thinking the King was the way to go. I was just needing someone to push me off the edge. I've got a solo rack coming and that can haul a soft bag for a shorter trip.
I can always address the back rest issue down the road if I decide one would be beneficial.
Thanks, fb

paul65k,
Thanks for the pics. Looks like you've got a nice setup there. And yes definitely old enough for the Beverly Hillbillies.

Wholly smokes.

I went with the chopped because, like Blues said, the looks. I also ride sole and I figure if I can't get my junk in my trunk, then I need to shed some weight....seriously, if I need to bring more, I just use a backpak and lash it to the rear seat or I will get a rack and mount it on top. I did go with the two-up mounting just in case someone's in trouble and needs a ride or my wife ever decides to ride with me.

On a SG the chopped TP looks great, really fits the streamline look I think, not that the king doesn't look good.
I chose the king with 2 up rack for trips and usually take my backrest with us and take the pak off for around town.
If I ever find the extra cash I'd like to have a chopped pak for everyday riding.

+1 on the King TP. I just got mine after i've been on 2 longish road trips and didn't want to have to deal with that again. I am sure you'll enjoy either one you purchase.

I ride solo as well, plenty of room in the chopped tour-pak. Between that and the bags I've had enough stuff for 2 weeks plus tools.

Paul,

I thought about putting a rack on top of my TP, but then I'd be right there with you and Jed going down the road, so at this time I'm not doing it. lol

Just finished a 5200 mile trip with my chopped T/P. If you're riding solo the chopped should be more than enough. Running two up, no way. Style was a consideration for me as well and I agree, the chopped looks best on the Street Glide. Most of you guys are riding '14 and '15 SG's but chopped looks best on '13 and older especially.

Farmboy,
I run my chopped in the solo position and with the backrest on my C & C solo seat the chopped backrest is perfect. The seat backrest slips right under the T/P backrest and gives me full support.

You will definitely have to plug holes if you use the chopped backrest on a King T/P. I have occasionally seen King T/P's on Craigslist or Ebay with the chopped b/r and the holes filled and painted.

I put everything we need in the Chopped and Saddle bags. I figured if I needed more space when the wife starts going more, then I will get an Ultra Classic. But for now, the Chopped looks good and works for me.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and pics.
Looks like the perennial favorite is the chopped for looks and style. I don't think you can beat it for that. But with a long history of going against the grain I went ahead and ordered a king. The only time I'll use it is if I'm going for more than a few days and this way I can bring more "stuff". Wether I need it or not. I hope I can figure out a good way to plug the holes so it doesn't look like sh*t.
Thanks again,
fb

I figured I'd jump in on this thread with my question. It looks like the OEM antenna will not work with the tour pac, Does the shorty antenna fit underneath the pac or does the antenna need to be relocated?

I have a pre-2014 tour pak on my 2015. I had about 8 inches clearance if I remember correctly. So..... no ... a shortly wont fit. I relocated my stock antenna under the seat. Search this site for threads on how to do it. Easy. Not as good as standing straight up..... but it works.

I must say I really like this look. Thanks for the pictures Aviator
