I was reading about Mobil 20w50 and came across this guys input. You think it is ok to use an oil with friction modifiers for engine only.

Here is what he said :

I ride a 2013 FXDC and have always used Mobile 1 V Twin 20w-50. This oil is an excellent product but I have decided to try Mobile 1 Racing 0w-50 (not the 4T). The reason for this is all HD`s Twin Cam engines run independent from the clutch or transmission just like a automobile engine without the liquid cooling, so why not take advantage of the "friction modifiers" that are added to the Mobile 1 Racing oil but not present in the Mobile 1 V Twin oil. The fact that you can run Mobile 1 V Twin 20w-50 in all three holes because you need some friction for the clutch to work properly has led me to try the Mobile1 Racing oil for my engine only. I still will be using the V Twin oil for the primary and transmission. Air cooled Twin Cams run hot. These "friction modifiers" should help keep wear and tear down inside my engine better than oil without them. Please understand, I am not trying to start a debate here. All Mobile 1 products are of excellent quality and the only oil I will ever use. This is just a personal choice that I have decided to make.

It seems logical, but at the same time I have a hard time trusting his opinion on that, if he's not applying that same logic to the primary and transmission by using fluids designed specifically for them, vs something that kinda works ok in all three holes.

I would be concerned with the additive package of the racing oil.

It may be heavy in antiwear additive, but it may be lacking in the detergent and ant-rust side of the equation because "race" enginges dont go 5K mikes between oil changes.

These concerns could be put to rest if there is an API rating on the bottle.

My 2 cents.

Why take the risk, advise and opinion of a complete stranger. I trust recommended lubricants Harley suggest and - we have a choice from those. Some like Red line, some like Syn 3. If you had a warranty issue with your clutch or primary, is that poster going to be there to justify and support his logic? More importantly would the Motor Company honor your warranty.

M1-V-Twin is made specifically for air cooled engines. The Folks at Mobile (as well as Amsiol, Red Line, Royal Purple, et.al.) have invested much time and money in research and development of lubricants suitable for specific applications. That said why try to reinvent the wheel or "If it's not broke don't fix it"
I have used M1 in my Harley's since it first came out in (if I remember correctly) the 70's. Before the V-Twin version was available I used standard M-1 15-50. Never had issue with either.
An Internet search will lead you to much information about ZDDP anti wear oil additives and and why too much is not a good thing.
