Like many others my air vent started buzzing around 40mph and it was annoying. I saw on several forums this was not unusual. I finally got the parts ( flap door & button mechanism) and convinced my service Dept to let me install them myself since it would be about Valentines NEXT year before they could work me in! I was worried the re-fit would do no good since parts looked the same but - it did, no more buzzing

Is this a new flap with rubber around it Like someone else had posted about getting ?
If not was it just how it was installed that causes the buzzing?
My SGS goes in tomorrow for 1K mile service and I want to make sure my vent is looked at I also have the buzzing

Get Back in Line

Flatlander, It is constructed out of hard plastic with a rubber 1/16 edge bonded to it all the way around. The original buzzing was caused because it did not close all the way flush.

I know what part (vent flap/door) is making the sound I can push on it while riding down the road to make the buzzing noise stop.
Someone prior to you had posted ,may have been another forum, that when they had the vent fixed/replaced the new flap has a rubber like piece all the way around that flap which made for a better seal,no gap, to make the buzzing noise.

Im also having this issue, untill i can get the dealership to fix it i put some painters tape over it to hold the door up so as to not be in the air flow causing it to buzzzzz...like everyone else its makin me nutz! I have to friends that have SG's as well that havent had the issue so it must just be the luck of the draw.

Had the 1K mile service done yesterday and was told the same line you always hear from any auto dealer...Unable to duplicate the problem.

Guess I'm going to have to return on a calm day when the wind isn't gusty making it easier to hear.
This is the second HD dealer in my area claiming not have heard anything about this issue.

Maybe everyone posting about having this issue needs to get on HD site and contact them about it ?

LOL

Just received a call from the dealer wanting to know if I was happy with the service yesterday.

Does anyone have the part number for the new vent door? my dealership cannot find it.

Sure hope you get the answer I would alsolike to know.
I asked the same question on another forum or may have been a thread here on SG and never heard back.
Someone did say that it may be the same part number but just a updated part ????

I said screw it.. took mine apart and added 1/8" foam adhesive... trimmed it back to fit flush. Nice and tight and no buzzing anymore

Guys- A quick and dirty fix is to get the clear 2 inch shipping tape and tear off two 4 inch pieces and tape each side in the up position. It worked fine for me in 5 minutes time.

True Mojo... but my fix does have to be repeated to open and close the vent....

I've read several fixes similar to what you have done Spazz but I refuse to tape up a part like this on a new just 2 month old ride that cost what I paid for it.
If I have to make an a$$ out of myself in the dealer to get something done I'm not above it.

I had my fairing off and to diagnose another issue.... while I was in there... I fixed the vent. Nothing can be seen from outside the bike.... The foam tape is on the upper inside of the flap. Works great.

There is no evidence I have done anything to be seen unless you take it all apart... my fix is internal.

Sounds like a great fix to me, as ive never torn apart a fairing is there a drawing someplace or a book that can help me with that? id love to have a service manual but dont know if i can even get one yet?

Don't bother fixing it yourselves. That's what warranty is for.

This is true.... I would agree.

However... I have tinkeritis and love to fix things myself.... it's in my blood. This was such and easy fix that I opted to do it rather than waiting on part... dropping the sled off and being without. It took all of 20 minutes to remove the fairing, then the vent... add foam adhesive, trim and reassemble. Now I know that a lot of people are not mechanically inclined and there is nothing wrong with that... so the warranty usage for the fix is the best option for those folks.
