Cut out my baffles.

So I have been looking for a new exhaust for my SGS. It only has 200 miles on it so far but sounds like a sewing machine. Needed to sound like a harley. I'm pretty much set on Rush Big Louie slash tip slip ons in chrome with 2.5" baffles. I like the video clips I have seen. So I got to thinking. If I install new slip ons what will I do with my oem exhaust? Probably throw them away. They aren't really worth anything. So I got bored and decided why not cut out the baffles and see how they sound. To my amazement it sounds just like my softail heritage classic I recently sold with vance and hines long shots. Took it for a test ride. Wow did it sound much better. Almost exactly what I was going for with a slip on. So now I'm faced with a dilemma. Do I still buy new slip ons for a sound that is a touch better? Or do I keep these? Lol. Before I cut the baffles out I could justify spending the cash...Now I dont know since it sounds pretty good.

personally i wouldn't cut the baffles out.... heard one... sound very 'tinny' to me. That's my .02

Since you already did.... if you like it... run with it... but you can do much better with a good slip on that will perform better.

Lucky for you living in Alabama I have to keep my head pipes in case that someday here in California they impose smog laws for bikes and I have to put them back on

Spazz...I believe "tinny" is the perfect word to describe the sound. Sounds better than stock, but a touch off from where it needs to be. I probably will still get a slip on. Just not in a huge hurry now.

Tinny is a good word. I had cut my baffles out too and thought it sounded ok until someone else rode my bike. After I heard the real sound - I hated it. Had to change the exhaust.

You would be surprised what you find on your local or nearby Craigslist on the cheap. My very first set of slipons were Rhineharts I picked up for $40 on CL. I little elbow grease and time to clean them up and ran them for almost 6 months. Sold them for $120. It's worth watching CL for smokin deals on a daily basis for stuff on the cheap.

Every day, I'm on here, craigslist, and a harley parts page on facebook...patiently waiting. But I specifically want Rush Big Louie with 2.5 baffles and slash cut tips.

I picked my bike up Saturday and cut the baffles out Sunday. Agree with everyone that it's a little tin can sounding... but definitely better than stock and for no money in it you can't beat it. I don't mind it too much... kinda like the rasp... for now. I feel like the best sound is gonna come from a full set of true duals tho without the foot heater Harley shoved in the stock pipes.

When it comes to 'full exhaust' systems.... make sure you 'know' what you want in regard to looks, sound and performance.... you want the best that suits what You want. Sound is a personal preference.. that's a given.. performance is is based on what will be best running when it comes to HP/TQ... and looks... if you like the dual exhaust or single 2-1. Best performance gains are 2-1 exhaust, then 2-1-2 exhaust and true duals are on the bottom since you have no exhaust scavenging between cylinders. Just giving you some insight before you dive in.... do some research on what YOU want.

I agree Spazz, I like Fuel Moto's referenced dyno charts posted by engine types, this can give you a decent reference point to actually seeing the impacted changes in HP/TQ by some of the most popular named brand bolt ons such as, slipon ons, air intakes and headers pipes. However, if you are in search of a particular audible exhaust note, this dollar to power comparison may not help.

Yea, mvrigger...I have my "spare" in the garage attic...just in case.

10-4 man thanks, I appreciate the info. Definitely will be reading many reviews & checking out sound clips before making any purchases. Saw a new one in the Harley shop next to my workplace yesterday.. 2015 RG with the left pipe as a dummy only... didn't understand the logic with that but then again I'm old school so still learning about all the new setups.

4" exhaust looks much better with stretched bags!

The exhaust with 2" baffle is a touch louder than stock with decent low tone to it. Not half as loud as cutting out baffles on oem exhaust.

With baffles pulled out, it sounds straight menacing! I love it with baffles out. Wife won't ride with baffles out though. Glad they are removable. I can see this becoming a regular thing...uninstalling/reinstalling baffles to accommodate the wife.

If the baffles come out easy, you can always shorten them down a little at a time till you get just the sound you want!

Would that have an effect on sound? I mean they offer them in different diameters, not lengths.
