I have 6,700 mi on my '16 SG. Sometimes (40-50%) of the time when I push the starter button, instead of an instant fast strong cranking, the starter loads up a second then starts cranking the engine, it is a slower weaker crank but the bike always starts. When this happens my voltmeter (the factory gauge) drops to just bellow 10 volts. It can do this at anytime and does not seem to be related to whether or not the bike is hot or cold.

Just curious what you guys see on you voltmeter when you start your bike? I'm thinking the slow crank and the drop to less than 10 volts is an indicator my battery is getting ready to chit itself.

Thoughts?

Do you keep it on a trickle charger? You can always take it to the dealer and have them test it. They should warrantee it if it's crapping out.

I have the same problem. Had the dealer check the compression release valves. They were OK. Tried a new battery.
I ordered the 1.4 kW starter that comes on the 110 CVO engines. Part 31619-06A. I'll install it this winter. I hope that will fix it.

I ride my bike every day just about so I wouldn't think I should need a trickle charger. I fully intend to bring the bike back to the dealer for this issue, just want to confirm it to myself before bringing the bike in. I have not always had good luck with dealers when it comes time for them to foot the bill.

Well I know everyone suggests a trickle charger but to me that's a bandaid on a bullet hole. A poor fix. If you use the bike more than once a week and it doesn't start or has difficulties, you have a problem. Depending on a daily charger is like saying you should always jump start your bike to me.

I ain't a tech but my experience with this bike and the last was that starting problems were the battery. On my fld, they also said one of the grounds was corroded but that was bs as I had sanded them all just weeks prior.

Check all your grounds, you can take them apart and clean them. I've heard mixed reports about using dielectric grease on grounds too. Dielectric grease is insulating but also prevent oxidation.

I dont know how long you ride it each time you fire it up but, my son was having weak battery problems with his 2014 Street Glide, he rode it every day to work but work was only 15 minutes away. The Harley tech told him that with all of the elecreonics that he needed to ride at least 30 minutes to charge the battery back up after last nights discharge. He puts it on a Battery tender about once per week.

Have the battery load tested.

I agree with you on that.

What should the amps be under the load test? I have my own load tester, just don't know what results should be.

TY

Not sure, motorcycle shops have Load Testers for Motorcycle batteries.
They pull a certain load for a certain length of time. The last one I seen had a chart on the load tester.

I have been through four batteries since I purchased by bike in 08/2014. I believe there were a rash of bad OEM batteries and the dealer has indicated the same. The last battery I installed was in Jan 2016, so this is the longest I have gone without failure so far.

I have just had to replace the battery in my 2016 Street Glide ( under warranty ) and it has only done 3300km. Had the dealership check it out and one of the cells had gone rougue. All good again and back on the rode

I got a load tester......anyone here know what the acceptable numbers are?

At room temp you should get over 300 amps, 400 with a new high quality battery. My Yuasa battery (GYZ32HL) is rated at 500 amps.
